Well shit ronny courtens, send them my way. I've been looking to do a big edit project (tv show / film) for years now. I work in Atlanta, so all I find are corporate gigs. Sure, the movie industry has been filming in atlanta, but they still send all the post work to LA.

I have suggested many ways of sharing work, as there is more work than editors, and now we can use low res media and there is a great great worklflow pdf, so the excuse there are no editors is just pathetic.

We as a community of FCPX editors need to put aside petty politics, not everyone can handle clients, I cannot, but I can edit, and the timezones makes this ideal, the US night is my day, so overnight work needed by a US based client can be edited by me during my day, so when you wake up, the work has been done.

I am not green in terms of editing, just lack experience in FCPX, the more I do, the luckier/better I become, that is just simple maths, not hard, for legal reasons, and well I do not want to be jailed I cannot show my previous work, as I have no legal rights to it.

A showreel is one way to see if I can do the tasks, the other is simulation, like what they do with A380 pilots, before they get to sit right seat, they have to prove ability in a simulator, then once passed as safe, they sit right seat, after more flights, more simulation work, they get to sit left seat..

So why not do the same, send a test for me, something that I could or anyone could edit, if you like my editing, lets talk, if not then tell me where I went wrong, just do not throw me away just cause I do not have a showreel, I did nothing wrong...

As FCP changed, so we need to adapt to a new way of working, no need to ship drives, the interwebs is fast enough, to send low rez in a short time from you to me and back again..

I'm with Ronny on this.

I feel like being a FCPX editor is an advantage at this point. Being a seasoned Avid broadcast editor helps me explain why FCPX is so amazing. I can talk to them from an Avid users view point. I just did a presentation at WGBH (Boston) about my FCPX workflow for a game show we are wrapping post on. I had the naysayers scratching their proverbial beards and asking intelligent questions.

There needs to be groups of "bilingual" editors, i.e. fluent in multiple edit systems, training seasoned Avid and Premiere editors in FCPX while they are on the job. Showing them the pain points, what is the same what is the different. We'd have them up to speed in no time.

FCPX is so easy to use I can "waste" my time enjoying this entire thread and still get my work done. :cheer:

GoPro released their VR 6 camera today. So maybe FCPX might have something lined up for this soon. its not awesome until you zoom out and just play with the sphere that is the video....still kind of niche, but it definitely has a future since the Oculus and Playstation headsets will become bigger sellers overtime.

VR is an utterly pointless feature upgrade at the moment - ITV in the UK have only just started accepting HD commercial content so VR is way off in the corporate and commercial world in terms of a necessity.

To be honest, I need to do some VR work soon so it's not really pointless. I don't work as a broadcast editor. I do work for art galleries, and exhibitions, also recently for Oculus Rift. So VR features would be very useful for me! Mind you, I would prefer if they added other features rather than VR at the moment.

Also, I really don't like 360 video. For me that's not real VR, real VR has to be 360 and 3D, otherwise it shouldn't be tagged VR at all IMHO.

360 VR has been very popular for real estate and engineering research for a long time now. It's just getting to the point of entering the video production norm now. And it is HERE NOW! DASHWOOD! Far from pointless. YouTube already supports 320 VR video.

Again, network collaboration is being done very successfully TODAY by companies like LumaForge.

On hiring distance editors: I hire the ones I already know. New ones have to show me past work. I can't send footage as a test, 1- due to copyright and much is closely guarded and no stranger will get their hands on it. I'm not alone in that. 2- I often, as other companies also, don't have time for that. Show me a sample of work done, show me a resume, I have to often hire on a tight deadline. Nature of today's industry.

BTW, Dave is attending the same presentation by Apple that I did yesterday, same NDA, can't say anymore than I have. DAVE, I'm hanging out in the hall here, working online. Come see when you get out of the seminar!

I didn't mean VR is pointless, I can just think of a hundred things that should be way ahead of VR in FCPX development roadmap.

This thread has gotten somewhat convoluted, but whoever was wondering about real world uses for sending a FCPX project to motion, One place I can see it being extremely useful is for Lyric videos, which have become quite popular on YT, and often consist of very complex animated text overlaid on, or integrated into a background video of a (multi-shot/angle) performance of the song or some other video background, that would be much easer to cut in FCPX, then send to Motion to add the text.

Agreed, and soon this will be possible in FCP X thanks to Wes Plate. Even more: it's a much better Send to Motion workflow than ever before.

Sorry for being brief, it was mid-seminar, I had to concentrate.

Color Finale Pro, no NDA, just finished the presentation that announced and demo'ed it. Releasing in May. Great pro features, grading surface interface (3 from Tangent only), save grades, reasonably priced, just simply major powerful. I'm sure Denver will post something about it publicly soon, seeing as how he just now made it public. Supports keyboard commands like undo, jump to next clip, playback. LUT gallery to preview. Just fantastic! Trying to think of a good reason now to not uninstall Resolve...
