The ancient FCPX terminology discussion.
Project -> Library - understandable
Bin -> Event - I'm not into weddings but ok
Sequence/Timeline -> Project - really trying to live with it but it constantly leads to confusion communicating with others...

Hi Nils,

What's in a name? If you want to call a Project a Sequence, I'm sure everyone will know what you mean. So I don't think Apple needs to change anything about this.

When FCPX first came out, I had a massive rant about the idiot new names, but after I calmed down, I thought about it, and for once I agree the new names are way way better!!

A new paradigm in editing, new names, a new way to think, editing is not only a timeline action, it occurs in the browser and outside of the app, so a new way to think, to use old terms I am sure was very much the way Apple was thinking, but clear heads, no doubt influenced by beta testers, suggested the new terms and rightfully so.

A library is the overall host of events, events contain many things, and very helpful in multi-day events, or to sort footage into a clear logical path.

Everything about FCPX is new, a new term storyline, no tracks, a blank canvas on which to work, I agree it is great we have new vocabulary, the old simply was not fit for purpose, and 2nd it helps when you say sequence, you are referring to something other than FCPX..

It aids communication!!!

Rename project back to sequence.
It's so confusing just to talk about it!

"We'll do a huuuge sequence, 12 episodes, international distributed..."

"Where do I find the old lower-thirds?"
"In the project..."

Or when people used to say "DAT Tape" when the T in DAT is Tape.

Actually I didn't really expect Apple to change their naming convention because I want it.
Nice thought anyway.
But I'm a little surprised that noone is still upset about this besides me.

Perhaps I'm too negative but I think they just did it to be different than the other editing tools.
They could have called it everything they wanted. For example ... hmm ... No ... Hmm ... No ...Yes I have it!
(Dr.Evil voice)
Arrangement(TM) it should have been called Arrangement(TM)

And yes, incredible how fast film vanished. Nearly no labs left in Germany.
Have to make a Super8 movie with my children before it's too late.

209 Days Since Last Feature Update

need more speed and fix bugs.

which version was the last feature update?
I never keep track, but I ran into this thread and did some maths. I'm not good at math, so pardon me if I'm wrong.
We've now gone 68 days since 10.2.3.

I keep wondering when they'll charge again for an update. This has been the best investment I've ever made! With each passing month, the monthly cost of owning FCPX goes down and it wasn't expensive to start with, which as of right now equals about $5.50/mo ($299 perpetual - I think is what it cost me).
Compare this with Premiere, which would have cost me $1,080 for the same amount of months.

This June will be the 5th anniversary of FCPX. I wonder if Apple has something in store for this milestone.

My standards are in an Event called 'Standards', not in Projects
And stills are automatically sorted in the 'stills' smartlist
could filter by date to find old ones ....
No need to dig'n-search manually ........ esp. not in rigid 'bins/drawers' :woohoo:

Just a matter of organization....
Was teasing YOUR scheme, not mine ..... ;)

" ...but after I calmed down..."

FINALLY! THANK GOODNESS! SHE CALMED DOWN!

LMAO! Just kidding, Justine! We luv ya!

Well, a Project is a type of Sequence. But so is a clip, "Open In Timeline", poof, it is a Sequence. A Compound Clip is a Sequence, also. Just as a Multicam is. So "Sequence" is an outdated term, and doesn't represent the Project with accuracy. We could nest Sequences, can't nest a Project. Thus, we call them what they are, Timelines. Everything in the Browser is a virtual container of one sort of another. Each has a specific purpose; clip, compound, multicam, project, still. Each has its own Timeline. So we don't edit in a "Sequence" because that term refers to something that technically, literally dose not exist any longer. We edit in Timelines. Most commonly, a Project timeline. I mean, I don't edit inside of a Clip's own timeline. Which could also be called a Sequence, but then, you see, the term Sequence gets way too confusing, technically.

So, if you post a question, and refer to your "sequence", I'll ask what type of sequence are you talking about? Just say Project, then I'll be clear. Or say Clip, and I will fuss at you for editing inside the wrong type of timeline. They're all sequences, that term is meaningless, just drop it already, PLEASE.

I´m trying to but it is not too easy when I get things explained so extensively.
Please believe me, I am understand the naming convention and the concept of FCPX.
And I agree with you on everything you are writing about sequence.
Perhaps I should have phrased the original statement differently and added a ;) because it was just what would have made me happy in that moment.

I accept that it´s going to be called project forever, I accept that obviously everybody besides me is totally and unconditionally happy with it but I´m still convinced that Project is a misleading term.
In common sense you could call a lot of aspects a "project" and event could be called a project, a library could be called a project, my whole editing suite could be called a project.

So whatever the answer may be, I´m totally trying not to write about it anymore.
Unless... :)
