While lots of folks equate Metal with 3D and games only, it is not limited to that. Works 2D just fine. It does become important for doing computational work in 3D so you would see more differences in rendering scene changes speeds. Parallax changes also come to mind for me.
PixelMator was updated to take advantage of Metal. Example of 2D usage.
Could be very useful in FCPX and especially Motion for generator, transitions, even color changes.
IMHO if Apple was using it in Motion already, they would be advertising the fact. I think Alex4D also was speculating that Apple may have snuck it in. Come Apple, fess up. Inquiring minds want to know.
Apple File System (APFS) will it Matter?
For those who want to know if the new coming in 2017 Apple File System(APFS) will have any meaning for ProApp and end users, Apple has posted a video from the APFS workshop. Hope it is public now?
Good explanation of some of the reasons to switch. Lots of benefits including nanosecond updating/tracking, sparse images, clones and snapshots(really fast watch the segment about adding iTunes), and Space Sharing. It will also be deployed for all platforms from watch to Macs.
This was just a entry level explanation and I think some additional benefits were left out.
Space Sharing for example and how Volume directories are built has lots of implications for FCPX. One thing not mentioned is that when you have Space Sharing, if you run out of space on a drive, you just attach another drive and instantly that drive will be spanned and usable by the user. As media files grow larger and larger(4-8K, 360 etc), being able to simply add another drive and double your available space…sweet
Volumes are dynamic and can use any space available without re-partitioning. Your volume does not reserve any space like now, but shares any space available, first come first occupy based on need in real time.
The speed of snapshots and clones, yep want that, not to mention that how they get written protecting the files against being disrupted/corrupted is great.
It also appears that multi-user simultaneous library usage possible. OK nobody will care for that I'm sure.
APFS also can accumulate files for more efficient block writing. Along with new Trim routines these will aid in better ssd/flash writes.
Couple the above with some of the new AVFoundation asset splitting/sharing abilities will move FCPX into a new era. Yep just speculating.

Not what I'm saying Metal is at all.
From the horse's mouth, Metal allows 3rd party developers to access the existing technology much more deeply in an easier manner. Resources Apple's developers already know, and have for a long time been tapping for some time. If some Metal coding technique offers an advantage to a pro app, that has yet to be seen. But, that's just the inside word to me. Plus what I've discerned for myself as a very long time engineer from the documentation of Metal on the "Mac".
And that's now a closed subject for me.
As for stuff not functioning in Sierra at this time, that's normal. This is a first "developers preview" release. Much of what it does is not yet fully functional, some of it non-functional. The new (and amazing) Apple File System is not complete, so when it installs, you don't actually get it. But you have the option to format a secondary drive with it. This is NOT the version to really evaluate it with. That old MBP that never gets used is going to gather some dust before I start testing plugins for some friends.
But, what I do see in it, what is functioning, is pretty awesome. Siri on a Mac is way more useful and easy than you may imagine. She won't do application functions, but she can do a lot of Finder level organizing and navigating.
Greg is right, Sierra and the new APFS will make a huge leap forward for Macs. But how it will effect the pro apps, it is all speculation at this point, based on incomplete information.
Remember, what was shown in the keynote is super incomplete. Notice the backgrounds of those slides with logos had dozens of new features that were light and no one picked through them yet.
Switch Control is amazing. Helps those who need to use head/eye control for computers, gain full control over Apple devices, iOS and macOS. So FCPX could become much more accessible to the handicapped than any other NLE. But, that's just speculation, again.
Just breath... next week is FCPX's birthday, and another date to anticipate and possible update to be released, as long as we're just speculating on things without evidence...
When you have been dealing with Apple for a very long time, you learn to read between the lines. And what I read between the lines right now is much more exciting for FCP X than I could have imagined before WWDC.
I can recall that Apple released the 10.0 version because they were feeling the heat from Adobe and their Mercury engine. I think I heard it on Richard Taylor's podcast. Also it is pretty cruel from adobe to release their update on the birthday of Fcpx. So I hope Apple can answer back with an awesome update!

Yes they did, and unfortunately at that time they had very little choice. It was also the biggest marketing mistake they ever made and I'm sure they are never going to do such a thing again. But things have changed a lot since then. If Apple pushes an update today or tomorrow or 4 months from now, this will have nothing to do with anything that any other company does.
We could see an update today. But if we don't, here's what I can infer from all other releases so far:
The next update will either be this month (June) or next month (July).
How can I say that? Every update since FCPX was released has never taken 6 months. The longest was between 10.1.1 and 10.1.2 which saw 5 months and 11 days between updates. The second longest we just had which was 5 months to the day (9/4/2015 to 2/4/2016).
If you take that as a pattern, we are past the 4 month mark from 10.2.4 (2/4/2016). So anytime between now and July 12 we should see the next update. Unless they make history again with the longest timeframe between updates ever.
This is organised by Future Media Concepts in such a way as to allow the ProApps team to be involved. Last year the summit included a presentation in the nondescript building where the ProApps team works. That meant that attendees could meet and mingle with the designers and developers of Final Cut.
As soon as FMC decided to have another summit this year, I would be very surprised if they didn't get in touch with Apple about scheduling. “We'd like to do another summit neat year - hopefully in Cupertino. If you would like to be involved again, do you think having it the same time of the year would be good? The last week of June next year will be the 5th anniversary of Final Cut.” ”We suggest late October.” “Excellent. Late October it is.”
The good news is that the session on the Apple campus is more than just a presentation…
Based on what Alex is saying, we may not see 10.3 until October.
I'm hoping that's not the case. If it is, we will see a 10.2.4 update before then. Or, we will see 10.3 between now and mid-July and then 10.3.1 in October with enhancements for the MacBook Pro, Mac Pro or both.
When I saw 10.2.3 I got the impression it might be a version for those who have good reasons not to update to the next version of OS X (now known as macOS Sierra). Apple has been great about letting Final Cut work with older OSes. The price of cool new features might be that 10.3 will only work on Sierra.
I have 10.2.3 just checked the US app store, nothing new to report... I had a quick read of the Adobe updates, nothing really all that mind-blowing, some VR stuff, I guess pandering to the masses.
The one thing I love about FCPX is the huge plug in community, how open Apple is in this regard, and basically how barren the apps are in regards Adobe, it seems Adobe is too scared to open up to the same level as Apple, and really on it's 5th birthday, this is something to celebrate, the openness of FCPX to developers, and to folks like Alex4D, to use their knowledge to make our lives as editors better, through the creation of plug in's, templates.
I thank all FCPX developers for being so creative and yes they should be paid, and I really really hope Apple carry on being so open, to folks to create more plug ins/templates. The editing would be the poorer if Apple took this away!!

There is this famous rumor about a 10 years masterplan ... but, for example, who can know the video-formats within 10 years? 5 years ago, 3D was the next big thing, actually VR is... Plus, who can know the development of macOS, in which FCPX is highly integrated, in the near future? Not to speak of hardware, computer/cameras?
