Does anybody try Carbon Copy Cloner to make safe copy of running OSX before Yosemite?

If you are just looking for the Mavericks install files, you do not need to use CCC, just intercept the install files from the downloads folder prior to installing otherwise it will self delete the files after installing. Many articles explaining how to create a flash drive installer on the web.
Or see this from Apple… support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372
If you are still on Mavericks and need to reinstall it is very easy, see this… support.apple.com/kb/PH13871?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
You can download the Combo Update if needed and there are ways to get the Mavericks download, legally, but it is not legal for anyone here to send you the files.
Hope this helps, Greg

Let me say it this way. I am on 10.9 and I want to update Yosemite (because Color Finale doesn't support 10.9). But I want to be sure that I have a safe copy of OSX that work with FCPX.

Yes, I had a clone of 10.9 before updating to 10.10... not specifically for the update, but because my HD is cloned every morning about 5 AM. I've only needed to use the clone once, but once was enough
I also could restore from Time Machine. The difference between the clone and Time Machine is that if necessary I could boot from the clone and be running in minutes. Restoring from Time Machine could take hours. I've pulled individual files off of time machine more times that I remember.
But why are you asking? If you feel the need to clone before doing the update then make a clone. You don't need our permission to do so.

Hi Brdski,
I always make a clone right before I update the OS and any major software. It is a good practice in case anything goes wrong.
So if you are planning on installing Yosemite, then cloning your Mavericks Boot drive with Carbon Copy Cloner is a great idea. CCC works fine. There are some recent version changes, so make sure your version of CCC works with the OS version you have.
Hope this helps, Greg

just to add my experience:
made a back-up of my int.HDD (just in case...) but then, being lazy, just upgraded without a clean install => for about 4 weeks, everything in normal condition, updated my apps, ... happy bunny.
And it feels faster … no scientific proof, just guts.
Funny observation:
launching Mac needs much more time compared to switching off, close to instantly ... :S

Booting a computer, it has to run through system checks, get all the millions of parts talking to each other, then the OS has to launch, configure, check, launch daemons, etc, etc, etc. More work than you can imagine getting a computer booted up and running.
Shutting down a computer it just verifies what is in RAM, write what it thinks it should to the drive, then powers off. Not much to it.
I do my updates like you to, Karsten. In all my Mac years, I've not had any issues. I run preventative maintenance weekly/monthly. Then before an update I'll do serious system maintenance first, verify software/hardware update comparabilities, etc. But, some folks do have issues for a variety of reasons. I consider myself lucky, and always do those backups.
