And they're not going to mention MacPros at an event when they're not ready. And they're not ready because Intel's new Xeon chips aren't ready yet.

Yeesh!

Makki wrote: In Apple presentation this evening, not a single word about Mac Pro or FCPX. I a almost sure that the company will abandon FCPX totally in near future.

I don't believe this is the case. They mentioned it a few times and showed 4K editing on the 5K iMac. And the video showed a fellow editing (or at least looking at) FCPX on his Retina iMac. Plus it is all over the place on the iMac 5K page.

In fact I think FCPX got bigger visibility that iMovie did today. :woohoo:

Now THAT'S food for thought.

Interesting thing is there's only an $800 price difference between the Retina and non-Retina iMac. Bodes well for an aggressive price on an updated Thunderbolt Display when we get it.

There is a 5K display, and you are getting a computer with it for free :)

How do you hook up a Mac Pro to it?

Unfortunately, this has been Apple MO in the past. It took a while after iMacs got Thunderbolt for the Thunderbolt Display to go on sale.

I was hoping that the new focus on the MacPro might change their pattern, but I guess not.

Consider how many years other Macs had Thunderbolt before the Mac Pro "tube" appeared with it.

We'll probably see it some time next year I'd venture.

The Mac Pro needs to be updated to Thunderbolt 2 with displayport/DP 1.3 (I believe is the #) so it can send the 5 k down a 'dp' pipe. The only reson the iMac can use the 5k display now is because it's using a unique internal bus.. and maybe also becuse of the custom Apple support chip they mentioned today.

The Mac Pro has 6 Thunderbolt 2 ports at the moment...

Yes, but the 20GB/s isn't enough for 5K thru-put, by most measures. So I'm not sure how it's going to work with current generation MacPros. The return of Dual-Link?

Doesn't matter FCPGuy, the current MacPro uses DP 1.1 NOT DP 1.3 which is the new spec only announced recently - just so it can send over 4k down the dp pipe that's in Thunderbolt2. There MIGHT be a way to send a 5k down 2 Thunderbolt pipes to a 5k monitor that then combines them to its display likethe new Dell 5k monitor is proposing.. but I hear it's not ideal and imagine Apple will update the Mac Pro to support the new DP 1.3 spec. All this in my casual reading. I'm not a graphics tech.

I think I'm more anxious to hear how well FCPX runs on that new Retina iMac.

Realizing my 'new' Mac Pro may not be able to drive a potential 5K T-Bolt display has made me very sad.

Downloading it now. But there must be a lot of traffic, I only get 2 MB/s. The download is 5.16 GB, so it will take awhile.
