FCPX 10.1.4 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION
Darren…Unfortunatley, the Ivy Bridge based design of the nMP is sort of klutz IMHO. Haswell has native support for USB3, TB2 and better HDMI output; Ivy Bridge no. The nMP was hacked together to allow enough PCIe lanes but is not the optimal CPU/MOBO for a Pro Mac. Ivy Bridge is a couple of years behind already. Unfortunately, the Haswell xeon was not ready for a new Mac that everyone was clamoring for. I think we will see a next gen Haswell MP next June?? USB3.1(adoption now set with some really nice improvements), HDMI 1.4, all with separate buses, not shared TB-HDMI. Basically, as soon as you unpack it, a new device becomes obsolete in terms of new hardware that is available due to design lead time.
For those wanting to try Yosemite, I highly recommend that you install on extra drive and option boot into it and see how it behaves. Or wait until a couple of updates to remove the bugs. Yosemite was tested by over a million users, but still saw 3 GMs, so what does that say other than Apple was still having issues as of a couple of days ago. iOS8 has already seen 3 updates with 8.1 release.
For those thinking about a new iMac, I'm looking forward to see new bench marks.
Gotta love the new retina display.
Finally, not surprising that no announcement of FCPX update, but I think it will come soon and will be Yosemite ready. Question is will the update mean you have to update to Yosemite or will you be able to use at least some new features but not others with Mavericks. My guess is FCPX update will require Yosemite. Since it is a free update and shouldn't require any hardware that Mavericks can't run on, I think Apple will make it Yosemite only. This will be the only way to unify iOS8.x with OS10x with the features Apple wants.
Hope this helps, Greg

I was confusing my Xeons. I had in mind the Skylake processors tied to the next 40Gb/s version Thunderbolt3, which isn't due until late 2015.
Which does make you think if they don't update MacPros soon, will they just skip current processors and wait just over a year...

I agree with Ronny, well thought out and quite true all around.
I'm guessing Apple would not make a new display that was totally incompatible with all the new mac pros. It's possible that it could be a dual port thunderbolt connection giving it enough bandwidth for the 5K display on the 'newish' mac pros.
I think Ronny said something about that mystery chip Apple had to invent could also hold the key.
But regardless. I want one NOW!

They very well could, it's still spec-wise far and above the new iMac, I'm loving my 10c nMP. What I can do with this sucker is far beyond what I hoped before getting it. 5K display or not, I'm still glad I have it.

This one looks interesting.

Would be nice to be able to take advantage of the 5GB file size allowed by Mail Drop.

The fastest FCP X feature update ever was 10.0.3 at 76 days.
We're only 58 days past 10.1.3. And if this info is correct, it could mean some BIG changes. And while the FCPX team could certainly have been working with Yosemite Frameworks for a while, I agree with VistaVision that it could be a while before the results actually turn up in the software.
But of course I would LOVE to be wrong.

This could mean "Send to Motion" would be a whole lot easier.

The changes in AVFoundation frameworks means (AFAIK) that an audio MIXER and many audio components like pitch, timing and several other features are now essentially built into system wide availability. These are Yosemite based frameworks, not application specific. There are corresponding APIs, new SDK, Xcode6 and command sets (asset strings) available. What it now takes is integration into the apps, and this is where the apps will have to be rewritten to take advantage of the new frameworks.
I think we may very well see it included in an update to FCPX as it has been high on the request list. Another reason I am optimistic is from other looking at AVAsset strings for mixers, channel assignment, output buss etc… Looks like lots of coding has been completed.
Bottom if Apple doesn't do it (I think they will) then looks like everything that is needed is available for a 3rd party to implement either as an app or more appropriately for FCP, as a plug-in. The other way is as an extension.
Anybody played with Swift playgrounds yet? Be interesting to play with the call outs and see if you could make a system service for an audio mixer. This would make an audio mixer available under the Apple services menu.
Older IOAudio frameworks are being deprecated.
Anyone notice that iPhone 6s are using H265 codecs?
AirDrop will now work between iOS and Yosemite
HTML5 is being implemented more. Speeds up Safari and now Netflix will not require Silverlight. (I think)
Mail Drop via iCloud Drive allows 5GB encrypted file transfers through Apple servers. If between 2 Apple computers, it just shows up on recipient end; otherwise a notice is sent with a 30 day timestamp for download. Should be cross platform and does not count against iCloud drive storage. Like to hear from someone that has tried it out!
Hope this helps, Greg

I agree with a lot of what he has to say. Can't say that I like the new translucency in Yosemite. My eyeballs like all the help they can get, give me high contrast, non changing backgrounds in text fields. Apple sure talked it up @WWDC.
Think this will be a personal preference.
Also it does use GPU and CPU resources. May slow down older systems.
Hope this helps, Greg

Go to accessibility prefs, turn on increase contrast and or reduce transparency. Much better.

Disproportionate Pictures wrote: On iOS Extensions provide a clear functional improvement in sharing between applications. On Mac, with it's traditional file system, and existing plug-in architecture, it remains to be seen if Extensions will provide similar advantages.
I for one would prefer to have all my plugins managed via the App Store. I have installers all over the place and it would be easier on my mind to go with the App Store model that iOS made popular. I believe the extensions approach requires an app bundle. , and This may be part of the mechanism that will allow effects/plugins to be purchased and centrally redownloaded the same way apps are.
