FCPX will not import Camera Archives created in FCPX

I can confirm that I too can not select a range when importing clips.

Yesterday I discovered a new issue. I now can't create a Camera Archive at all from my BMPCC. The only recent change that I'm aware of is using OS 10.10. BMPCC is firmware 1.97. FCX 10.1.3.

In Import FCPX can see the card and Import the clips. If I select Camera Archive absolutely nothing happens. There's no response. Tested this with two cards from a shoot yesterday.

OK thanks for checking. Do you think it's worth reporting this to Blackmagic or Apple? I assume BM would be the people to talk to first ...

Regarding the Archiving, I'm not having any problems. BMPCC is 1.97 and FCP 10.1.3, but I haven't moved to Yosemite yet (I usually wait until the dust settles because of stuff like this), so that must be your issue I assume.

I think we can safely say archiving BMPCC cards within FCPX is off the table!

I reported the flawed archives to both Blackmagic and Apple back in July. I had tested in FCPX 10.1.1 and all the way back to BMPCC firmware 1.5. Previous to 10.1.1 I had good archives. I believe the issue may have began with FCPX 10.1.

The Archive button not working is specific to Yosemite.
I tested the same BMPCC card on FCPX 10.1.3 on with OS 10.10 and 10.9.5. It works in 10.9.5.
As a "control" I tested a card from a Canon Vixia on the same two systems. It works on both.

So the Archive Button not working is specific to Blackmagic and 10.10.
The Archive corrupted metadata is specific to 10.9 (haven't tested earlier).
Both are specific to Blackamgic. Canon Vixia doesn't have this issue.

Please report to both Apple and Blackmagic. That's the only way they can know the extent of the problem otherwise they may think it's an isolated case.

Blackmagic did get back to me in late July and confirmed the issue (they were able to duplicate it). Apple often doesn't acknowledge these unless they need to communicate for additional information.

Will do. It's the range selection issue that is a real problem for me, so I will be highlighting this too (the archiving issue has straightforward workarounds but this doesn't have any at all AFAIK) ...

Just importing two cards shot with a canon dslr this afternoon. I copied both into one folder with the date one. Went to make a camera archive and... nothing. Weird. It's the first time i've tried it since moving to Yosemite, must be a bug?

Will boot from my backup of Mavericks to make it in the mean time.

It does. IPB H264 mov files. I can't say i tried importing straight form the card. I wonder if the bug is to do with importing .mov files from a folder. I just booted from a hard drive with Mavericks on (thank you Super Duper) and importing the same folder worked fine as normal. Reported it to apple as a bug too.

Just a wild guess but maybe something about Yosemite prevents cards with .mov being made into Camera Archives.

Certainly looks that way. Let's hope 10.1.4 isn't far away.

Can't reproduce this. I have a folder of clips shot on a 5D MKII. If I select the folder, which contains its DCIM and MISC folders, in the Import window I see the QuickTime files and the Create Archive button is active.

I have not tried to combined two cards into a single folder.

Have you moved folder content while the application was open?

Ah, that could be the difference. I copy all the movs from the DCIM folder om the card into a new folder on the hard drive. I copy all footage from the cards shot that day into it so the new folder just contains movs. Then I create a camera archive from that. It lets me several pics taken on the same card (they go into aperture) and collect everything into one archive.

Creating archives this way has always worked up until now. Weird that Yosemite break this :/

From Blackmagic support:

Thank you for taking the time to contact support. I remember working with you on a similar FCPx camera archive issue a few months back. The issue has been escalated to product management. There is not much of a workaround at this time. I will be in touch if further developments surface.

CBlakeston,
Please do tell me if you get any response. I wonder what they'll say about the range selection issue. You'd think something as simple as Apple ProRes recorded to a card would be the simplest of compatibility efforts.

Just a quick update. No response from Apple. I was hoping the 10.10.1 yosemite might fix it or that there might be an FCPX update alongside it but nothing yet.

Still having the same problem - can't create camera archives from .folders of .mov footage. I'm having to boot into a partition Mavericks when ever I want to mak a camera archive. Super annoying.

Super annoying to say the least. There's no way to create an archive after the fact if this issue is ever fixed,.. unless that's part of the fix.

It's possible an issue like this involves fixing a few things such as both OS and FCPX updates.

I guess we could just use folders with the same naming scheme which to all intents and purposes would be the same. But then they won't match the 300+ archives I've already made :/ it has to be a bug. The create archive button is highlighted but does nothing when you click on it. Surely they'll fiix it? *crosses fingers*

Matt,

You may try my VirtualCameraCard ( www.spherico.com/filmtools/X-Files/VirtualCameraCard.dmg )

Just drag the ProRes files to the apps table (either copy or create a sym-link).
Save - a new disk image will be created.
This disk image is seen by FCP X as a camera card (not a camera archive).

Now you can work with it like with any other camera card,

- Andreas

Looks like 10.1.4 update fixes the create archive in Yosemite bug I was having. FCPX opens much, much faster on launch too, so it seems it's been given a yosemite tweak under the good :)
