New application to install/manage Templates

I'm noticing there is still a fair amount of confusion regarding how to install distributed Motion Templates. A while ago I wrote a Cocoa application that greatly simplifies the process of installation.

My application can be used as a simple installer. Just drag in the downloaded content folder, define the destination that matches the format of the template, press SEND ... and you're done. You can take this to the next level by defining custom Categories and Themes, often omitted by the creator of the template package(s). The application also features a Backup Utility and an installation Log.

Here's a quick demo. Keep in mind it's not necessary to create Categories and Themes. As noted you can use the application as a basic installer if you choose.

Demo

Here's the download link ... OSX 10.7 or higher:

toMotion

Be sure to review the Help Book located in the application's Help Menu. toMotion is unrestricted. There is a PayPal link located in the Help menu as well.

Disclaimer: As noted in the application installer:

The software application linked to above is provided as is without any guarantees or warranty.  The author is not responsible for any damage or losses of any kind caused by the use or misuse of the software.

Although you don't have to use the theme or category template developers suggest, there is a point to following these recommendations.

If two editors have the same effect in different locations, then any projects they share between each other will not be able use that effect.

If someone keeps my 'Circular Zigzag a4d' in the 'Distortion' category as I suggest and uses it in a project and sends that project to an editor that has installed 'Circular Zigzag a4d' in the 'Basics' category, Final Cut Pro will show that effect as missing.

New features coming up in the next release including Framerate Conversion ...

Demo

I think it would be better to retain the original copy of the project file and work with a copy. I'm coding this feature now.

Perhaps you could automatically rename the template if you modify it. Editors will run into problems if they are handed a project that refers to effects by name which can be found on the Web.

If they download (and even pay for) effects which aren't the same, but have the same name...

Motion templates are designed to work at any frame rate. What advantages have you found in changing frame rate and project resolution?

Alex,

My plan was to append the current date to a copy - aka the original prior to modification. Does that work? Also - there's no option to edit the resolution. The text input feature only ads a Theme. That's it. I find this useful. It creates needed organization and accessibility in the FCPX Themes Browser.

As far as the framerate conversion - there's been some requests out there for various reasons. Again the app was built for personal use. I thought others might find it useful. If you use it and there's something you would like to see. let me know. It's the least I can do for you ...
