I've used still images only (from the Desktop Pictures library) but of course you can use moving images as well.

The great news is that Apple have finally solved the Drop Zone video issue in 10.0.06 so that you can now select a specific range directly from the Event Browser and it will keep the start point of the range - previously it defaulted to the start of the entire clip and the only workaround was to edit the clip into the timeline and select it from there.

Yes, indeed. This works just as well with video as with stills. For details of how to use Drop Zones successfully in FCP 10.0.6 see here:
