ks_BulgeZoom/kind-of Dolly Zoom 16 Nov 2015 08:51 #70693

Hi,
in this thread, jeremy asked for an effect, which imho is a new variant of the famous Vertigo-effectt or Dolly-Zoom.

Threw a few filters together, and here we are:

after installing and applying to a clip, you have two sliders:
• scale to fit, in case you clip/pic doesn't match the project size
• bulge, which is the effect - it is internally a rig, which kepts the size of frame center, but bulges the outer parts ..

keyframe it, and it gives you that effect, Jeremy, you're looking for!
feel free to customize to your needs, post your improvements here.

thank you :cheer:

If I may add, would be awesome a non-croped (scale) option so that when zooming in we still be able to reposition the clip.
Again thank you for all the sharing

…would be awesome a non-croped (scale) option so that when zooming in we still be able to reposition the clip.…

… hmm, can you elaborate that, perhaps with some screenshots (photoshop a mockup…) , I'm not sure what you mean…

The effect has to be in the centre of the frame… and moving the pic would a) demand a bigger-than-project pic and b) moving the centre of the bulge would give some weird impression, at last in my mind - sort-of 'bumping' (a bit like this:
www.fcp.co/forum/6-motion-5/26065-maybe-...s-fun-with-bump-maps )

oh, I forgot: Welcome, Didier, to fcp.co! :)

Merci Karsten
About the bulge nevermind, it actually takes longer to explain it than, despite the foreign language and my absolute zero level, to change your project in motion. Already managed a filthy bastard version (but has green eyes) to do what I want: zoom and reposition the image without crop: still have to figure out the why cannot scale it pass a certain level.

BTW that bump map it's loads of fun to play with. Some years ago I animated the musicians of a band with an intro with those kind of maps and high rez stills... so much work and so little glory. Well tea is brewing

… still have to figure out the why cannot scale it pass a certain level. …

phew, just realising by opening this old effect of mine, then I didn't care for any 'modifications' - the groups are not named, all in German - sorry for that! … first steps in plugin-making :S

The scale parameter of that group is 'connected' to the rig - which limits the max to 105% … And you can not rig/link/'connect' a parameter to two diff. 'knobs'… scale by rig AND scale by its original slider = nogo.

Diff. story if you use a detour - scale that group by a 'Custom' behaviour; and control that Custom behaviour via a rig… then, you can 'override' the fix max. value…

Sounds perhaps silly, but I still don't understand what you need such a feature for - but why not scale the clip via FCPX Transform tools? Bulge for that dolly-zoom, and transform to scale the clip (or do some Ken Burns like stuff with it…)

or am I completely off track… :silly:

Not silly at all. I wantED (achieved already) to do a normal zoom into the image. Yes, at first I used transform but then I saw and installed some of your effects, VERY NICE THANX. I was interested in the bulge 'cause I liked the feeling the distorsion gave while zooming in, scaling really. It is something I probably won't be using all the time, but for this shot (you've got a magic dragonfly dancing the devil song) the distortion kind of added to it, after all dragonflies have multifaceted eyes. Just a sec, need more tea...

I made a raw gif of the thing, before leaving I thank you once more for explanation on the possible fix/patch. Need more time in motion, more dancing you see :cheer:

Hi Karsten,

thanks for the template ! was struggling what to do when the transform effect is applied and same time an own soccer template should be applied in order to avoid a transformation on that too.

But with your template problem is fixed. So thanks again!
