Hi,
Didn't know where to put this. Maybe a sound topic would be usefull.
I once found a software that would isolate specific sounds in a sound file,
Guitar only, drum etc...
We could pinpoint crows or a small brook in the same file.
I can't remember the name...
Has anyone crossed this software?

The interface was visual and we moved inside the space to isolate the sound.

iZotope's RX does this.

Noise can be useful. Yes, various VST plugins can remove unwanted freqs and sounds but have you ever considered extracting them and adding to 'clean' video?

A good example of this is to identify pops & clicks from an record transfer then audition 'noise' only. That noise, as it were, can be exported and dubbed into digitally clean and antiseptic audio. Ambient street and environment audio contain interesting undertones worth investigating.

My objective is not to remove noise but to isolate it.
In a soundscape from a field recording I could isolate a bird or a truck backing up.
Sometimes I only need one sound to mix with others.
I am manipulating the sound track to use specific sounds inside that soundtrack.

I understand what you're trying to do. I hijacked the topic to insert a variable most people wouldn't consider.

There's a KARAOKE type plugin that'll closely strip lyrics from a tune so there should be something to isolate the typical freqs and signatures of instruments. Your query makes me want to monkey around within iZotope to see what it can do... something I never thought of exploring.

I suggested RX to remove noise. Sounds like you want ambient sounds to fill in. That's a very different operation. When shooting, you'd want to run the camera for a minute before and after the scene, or find canned ambient audio files (like the ones that come with FCP).

Hi Ben,
I want to isolate noise and use it.
I'm not looking for ambient sound or room tone.
As an example, the software I am referring to (which I can't remember where I found this!!!)
I can visually see a drum, a guitar, a flute.
Then I can isolate just one section and keep that.
I recorded birds outside. If I hear a truck I can focus on the bird and remove the truck.
I can then focus the truck and remove the bird.
My first post might not have been clear enough.

Thanks.

RX can do frequency isolation, but it's not cheap, it's got a steep learning curve, but it is very powerful.

Indeed.
It's the first one I checked after your initial post.
Like you say.. quite expensive.

I'm not an audio expert but I think Melodyne can do this: www.celemony.com/en/melodyne/what-is-melodyne

Yes. That might also work.
Price tag is hefty for my needs.

Izotope RX Spectral tools allow you to do this indeed I think but it takes a bit of work to get it done well.
