I need to purchase a new Raid device I need speed without breaking the bank.

I am leaning towards the Lacie 6GB TB Raid for $600. @ 327 MB/s.

Suggestions?

How often do you need 327MB/s?

How much capacity do you really need?

Do you end up buying this already?

My biggest problem with the thunderbolt raids on offer is that they want to sell you the drives (which we know they don't make) with the excuse that we've tested and approved these drives. OK, so they want to avoid people buying drives their systems don't work so well with, but the SATA interface has been a standard for so long that drives 'should' work just fine. How many drives have you added to a Mac or PC or even an external dock that haven't worked?

When my iMac arrived next week (hopefully Monday!) I have a dual USB3 dock that cost me £50 that I'm going to hook up in the short term with 2x 4TB drives in RAID0.

To be fair I already have a Synology DS414 on the network for backing up to (it;s actually fast enough to edit from as well) and this little £50 USB3 dual dock gives me > 240MB/s with the drives easily swappable.

Once Thunderbolt raids become available without drives at a rational price then maybe I'll think about moving over.

The Promise Pegasus R4 Raid can be purchased at Apple for $650 in Canada.
I was going to purchase it but of course it was not in stock at my store.

I agree raids can be way over priced particularly the Thunderbolt variety.

I did purchase the Lacie 2big TunderBolt 6TB Raid for 550.

I was 600 on the website but inshore it was marked at 550, with drives.

It's quiet, the 4TB I hear can have an annoying clicking sound parking the head.
It does not get hot sustained transfer of 3 TB took several hours and it was barely warm.

I think you made the right choice going for the IMac, full spec. Best bang for the buck.

I'll certainly be looking at a new raid within a few months, so I'll certainly come back and ask if you're still happy with it (hopefully you will be) when I'm ready to buy.

It's a little more expensive here, but that's as much down to the 17.5% sales tax as anything else.
