FIlm Convert and LUTs was created by stupla
HI,

Sorry if this is a stupid post.
I've been seeing a lot of adverts recently for FIlm Convert and Cinematch.

I've not used either of them but do use Luts, now and again, when working with my footage.

I'm wondering what advantages if any, film convert or something similar, would give me over dropping in a LUT?

Also is there much of a difference between Film Convert and something like  Colour Finale 2.
If anyone has any thoughts on this or could direct me to previous discussions, then I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks

Two different animals that can be used complimentary or individually. FCPX can manipulate LUTS fine on its own but CF gives so many more opportunities to micro manage the look. For me FilmConvert allows tweaking & pushing a look further.

Don't believe I've ever used FilmConvert alone but always with another LUT manipulator (Color Finale, Cinema Grade, etc.) first. May or may not use one of the inherent film stock emulators to whatever I adjusted in the LUT but always use the film grain to take away the antiseptic sharpness that is HD video. Those outside the trade often notice the different look but can't pinpoint what it is. It nicely dresses out most anything FCPX produces whether you've used Color Finale et. al. or not.

Used both in this off the cuff, chance encounter shoot of folk drawing on the sidewalk as a David Bowie birthday tribute but don't know to what extent one was used over the other.

Believe the LUT used was called KODACHROME, dialed back a bit.

Hi,

Thanks so much for the reply. Very much appreciated.

Do you think it's best to buy both FIlm Convert and Colour Finale or CInema Grade?
And, is there much difference between Colour Finale and CG?

I'm a little confused about the difference between them.
Really sorry if these are stupid questions and really appreciate the response.

Many thanks

Cinema Grade is another way of doing things Color Finale does. I have both but divided as to which is more advantageous to use. Really depends on the project.

There're demo periods for all these products. Buy when temporarily discounted and never start to grade something important a few days before a demo period expires.

Most never get a close and personal encounter with film grain. This is 8mm film recently reconditioned, recovered, transferred and the condition as delivered. I'll post a comparison frame of 'blue hair' (if I can find it) and let you be the judge if the FilmConvert version supplies more emotion than one that's stiletto sharp.

Film has a develop date code, repeating every 20 years, along its edge. This one is circle plus designating either 1931 - 1951 - 1971 as date processed with process by 1941 on the box. With the war and all it was likely set aside and finally developed in 1951, though color film was available all through the 40's.
