Can anyone create a effect called "bump"
what the effect does its simply zoom in to from 100% to 80% then zoom out back to 100% at a fast interval continuously . We should be able to control the speed of the zoom in & zoom out

its a effect i saw in virtual dj

thank you for your help

hi, trying to get my head round when/why you might do this, that sort of strobing is pretty nausea inducing;) is it a music video? I would think that it would only be utilised for very short periods of time and perhaps (if music) would be beat matched, simpler to keyframe scale attribute. be interested to know the end use. Cheers

Pretty common in Music Videos; it would be interesting to see if it could be made with a way to match the bump to the BPM.

This is often found with the AB Strobe effect (already made by member here, NocoDave), and with the Grind effect (where the video freezes, and then repeats the last send or so before freezing again, repeatedly). You often see these effect in extreme sport video too (skateboarding & snowboarding especially).

It would be cool if someone was able to make a music video plug in pack featuring the full strobe, bump and grind pack!

In the "Template Master" app I have an effect called "Shake Strobe", it's not a free one I'm afraid, but has been quite popular.

It doesn't do this exactly, but a similar effect can be got by setting the blend mode to normal, the strobe style to sine and the strobe frequency to 100, then the Shake FX Frequency and Shake FX Amount can control what you want to a degree, but there is randomisation in there so there's no control over an exact 80-100% and everything else is still designed to have an erratic/random element.

NocoDave - how does the template master app work? Do I just install it and then I an choose which templates to download or buy? How much do you charge generally for the paid effects?
Is the app stable with Lion 10.7.3 and latest version of FCPX?

The app is stable and only runs on Lion, there was a problem with the previous version when I tried to make it run on 10.6 (due to 10.6 app store related limitations), but it was still then stable on 10.7.

There is one of the free transitions "Push" that doesn't operate properly in FCPX 10.0.4, but I uploaded the replacement file on this forum to fix it, It's just a temporary measure, I'll add it to the app on the next updates.

I will always check that everything runs correctly on every FCPX update and update anything if necessary.

You just download the app for free from the app store and open it. Selecting a template from the list will show a preview video and an operation instruction pdf which you can read before making any decisions. If it's a free template hit "Extract", then "Extract" again in the window that opens and it will be available for use in the FCPX template browser.

If it's a paid template hit "Buy", confirm you want to purchase, and extract as with the free templates. From then on the template will be available to extract again without repaying if you delete it from your Movies folder, re-install your Mac etc.

If you want to keep any of the free templates it's probably a good idea to keep a backup, I may remove some of these as the list grows and I add more, I've not decided yet.

Other than the free content the templates on there just now range from 69p to £6.99 in the UK. The effects that are on there are £1.99 or £2.49 I'll continue to add content at similar prices but the stuff I'm working on at the moment is soon going to expand the price range.

I just put a quick version of this together, I'm not a big fan of it so won't be taking it any further, but I attached it here if it's any use to you.

Here's a version of this kind of thing I've just cooked up using Quartz Composer to build the effect:

File Attachment:

File Name: TKYBumpLayer.zip
File Size:377 KB

It's a title effect so you can put it above your source footage and shift it until you've got the sync just right which I think would be easier than using a filer or a generator but it's easy to make it one of the other types. Plus you may well want ot have a background rather than black.

There's a drop zone for the footage, you can set the speed of the bump at anything from 0-1 second (.5 is 120BPM). The nicest thing about this way of doing it this way is that you can have a choice of lots of different types of interpolation methods - there really is a huge range of choice thanks to QC's built-in options.

Might be interesting to you, I don't know.

Hi Simon, I almost put an optional drop zone in the effect I made incase a different background was required, then I realised the effect can just be applied to a connected clip with the storyline as the back ground.

Your title isn't working for me, I just get a drop zone and nothing else, when I open it in Motion it tells me "the following items used to create this project are missing: TKY Bump - Missing Generator".

Am I missing something with it having been built with Quartz Composer?

You guys (Simon Ubsdell & NocoDave & everyone else who makes these effects) are stars!

So how about making a Bump n' Grind full house Simon? (Actually I guess the Grind effect is very easy to just cut to the beat manually).

Ah, OK. Obviously it needs the QC composition that I started with which it needs to reference as a filter from within Motion.

I'm a bit new to QC so I'm just trying out the workflow at the moment. Obviously it's the perfect tool for this sort of VJ effect and it's very popular with the VJ community for that reason.

CHV has a Quartz Composer Collection that includes a utility to convert QC to a form that will be recognized and used. I've not dabbled with it much, but it's there. And his QC stuff that works in FCP X is really great, too.

Thanks for the tip about CHV which looks well worth pursuing (when I can justify spending $99 on another timewasting hobby!).

So I went and bought CHV following on from Ben's recommendation - though I rather wish I hadn't at the moment.

I'm having registration difficulties in the first place, and secondly it doesn't look as though this is a great tool for distributing free plug-ins (it's designed to get people to pay!).

Which is a shame because I've refined my Quartz Composition to include not just the scaling paramters but also zoom blur and a blgue distortion (like a speaker cone pumping), plus there's a BPM input control so you don't have to do any conversions.

And there's loads more that would be really easy to add. I'm sure a few of you would quite like this effect though obviously not those beyond a certain age ;-)

It all works fine for me (becaue I have the technology to get it into Motion 5 and hence FCPX) but without a way to share it with you guys it's not much use for now!

It's unfortunate that there isn't an easy, flexible shareware option for turning Quartz compositions into shareable Motion templates - now wouldn't it be great if someone knew someone who could write one for us?!

What registration issues are you having? Did you launch the CHV Config app in your Applications folder?

Email Chris at CHV, he'll get you set up. He's a good person to work with.

As for distributing free QC plugins, there's no real tool I know that does that. Aside from Apple's own installer app. But that may be something you want to look in to.

Hi all

Here's a test render of the effect at 120 BPM with everything set to max freak-out (not pretty but it'll give you an idea).

Hi Ben

Yes, I ran the whole installation procedure as recommended by Christoph - still waiting to hear back from him.

Could you clarify what you mean by Apple's installer app? Sounds like maybe that's the way to go ...

Far out! Nice!

If you've ever installed software on your Mac you've seen the typical Installer. If you have the XCode developers tools in stalled, I believe you should have access to customizing an installer for yourself. You'll have to do some research on that, my knowledge about that is very limited.
