Hi HoleInTheHead,
Motion and FCPX aren't very good with 3D so you need to use another program or a plug-in.
Blender does 3D and is free, but you need to learn the program.
www.blender.org
Then there is mObject plug-in for Motion/FCPX.

Here is a MacBreak Studio tutorial on using mObject in Motion…
See the early part with extruded text and decide it that would work. If so very easy to set up in Motion. Just as they say, not true 3D.
You would then need to either use key framing / mask or TrackX to do the fly-by part.

Hope this helps, Greg

If you're working in Motion, and building sets in Motion, you can just fly the camera, and not worry about tracking anything. Add a few strategic lights, too. But if you'd just laying it on top of a video clip, Motion's built-in tracking will do a good enough job.
I highly recommend the mObject plugin. It'll do the text for you just fine.
There are also ways to fake thickness in Motion that works pretty well.

Hey all!
First post from a complete NOOB!
Now that Motion has it's own 3D text, can this be revisited for those of us on a tight budget and maybe can't afford mObject?
Can the native Motion 5.2.1 create and attach 3D text to footage to create the effect shown in the OP?
