Echo out

What would be a way of creating an echo out effect? I have a video montage with a music piece underneath. Since the music piece is longer than I need I have it fading out. But instead of fade out I'd rather have an echo out effect. I've noticed this effect being used in films but at the moment cannot recall any examples.

Not sure if I know exactly what you're talking about, but look inside Motion, in the Library, check out Filters > Time > Echo.
Or do you mean an audio echo? Then in FCP X, Effects Browser go to the Audio effect, to the Echo collection, and use the Final Cut "Echo Delay". Super easy to use. One dot in the graph to control. Taller the lines, the louder the echo. More spaced out, the longer the delay.
And here's a trick, add a Gap Clip after your video clip. Place them both in a Compound Clip, apply the Echo Delay to the Compound. This will allow the echo to continue after the clip has stopped playing. Or just make the last frame a Hold frame, and the echo will last the duration of that Hold frame.

OK, this is a bit hard to describe but I'll try.
By echo I mean an audio echo out. A song is suddenly stopped but not with an abrupt stop or fade out but with an echo out. This echo out effect prolongs a distinctive note or sound and then all becomes silent when this echo has disappeared. A nice way to end a song in the middle.
Here is one example I found - in "Lost Higway" the D.Bowies song ends with this echo out effect at around 2:22 when his voice suddenly echoes for couple or more seconds and the song is over.

That is not an echo, it is a reverb with a long release, but same thing as I described for an audio echo, just go to the "Spaces" collection and use PlatinumVerb. Place a Gap Clip to the end of the audio, make it a Compound Clip, apply the PlatinumVerb to the Compound. Or create a Hold frame (shift-h) from the last frame of the clip, and the reverb will last through the Hold frame.
