Problem importing from canon xl2 was created by Mark Knowles
Hi - new member need a bit of help.
I just bought a Canon XL2 to learn with and am having trouble importing footage into FCPX. FCPX recognises the camera and allows import, but it breaks the clips into hundreds of 3 frame clips. Importing into iMovie works fine. I am using a Macbook Pro 17 inch, 2.4 ghz iCore i7 with 16 GB Ram, a SSD, and FCPX 10.0.7 (if that makes a difference). I am also using a TDK DVM60 tape and wonder if the tape is the issue?
Any help appreciated.

Make sure there are no other Firwire devices connected while capturing?

Thanks - there are no other devices connected.
I think it was the tape as I don't have the same issue with another tape - not sure how that works lol

I was going to say it sounded like a bad tape, but I wanted to verify the obvious first. FCP looks at metadata (time of day) for its guide in making these brakes. Problem is that Mini-DV tape was developed as a consumer product, and it is very unstable. Timecode is not traditionally written to it as consistently as one would expect. Way back when, when Mini-DV and NTSC was all we had to work with, we went through many tapes that had TC issues. Legacy FCP had a way to ignore TC, but FCP X is just too stripped down for tape capture to do that.

I did not know that - thanks. I will have to discard tapes that show this issue I guess. It imported fine into iMovie for some reason just not FCPX

I once had the similar the trouble with my Canon camcorder XL1 to FCP importing, but it works well in iMovie. I haven't figured out the solution, so I have to give up on my Final Cut.
