Help with Text Reveal Effect was created by tedtv

Hey there! Can anyone send me a tutorial on how to make text appear after an object in a video has crossed the screen? I want to have text appear as a broom is going across the screen in slo-motion, as if the text was somehow hidden behind it or fell off the broom as it passes across the screen. I've seen this in movies and commercials but don't really know the correct name. Thanks
