Difference between AE and Motion 5?

I haven't gotten around to really using after effects yet, but I have been playing around with Motion 5 ever since I got FCPX. What are the major key features that stand apart AE and Motion 5?

I always hear people down talking Motion, or if there is some simple effect like motion tracking, everyone seems to just right away say 'it's only done in a sophisticated program like After Effects'.

Does anyone have a list or description of what can ONLY be done with After Effects, and is not capable of being done in Motion 5?

I almost feel like looking up After Effects tutorials and just applying them to Motion just to show people that this isn't a cheap program not capable of doing anything great

AE does a couple of things Motion doesn't at the moment, but not a lot. I started with AE over ten years ago, and haven't touched it since Motion was released. But that's just me. 90% of what I see folks do in AE can be done in Motion. Add Mocha, tracking gets close to equal. I'm sure there are folks here who will come bash Motion. But if you're doing high end compositing for film, you'll go with AE. If you're working with video, Motion does pretty much what you want. I don't know that any one has complied a side by side list, that would actually be difficult to do.

Pretty much every mid to high end professional motion graphics professional I've worked with or spoken to uses both, and admit most of the work is in Motion, going to AE only for the few things it has over Motion. And I've in more cities than you can count over the past 15 years.

That's my perspective. I'm sure others see it differently.

There are much more pro plugins in the AE world. Trapcode by Red Giant and the Video Copilot stuff.

I've used Ae since close to its year dot, I've been using Motion for a couple of years and have been keeping an eye on what its been going and what it is capable of since its beginnings before jumping on it.

Ae is a billion times more versatile than Motion, but I love the way Motion works, it's like a GUI for for Ae's expressions, and more. Primarily my work is in motion graphics and for that it is great.

There are a few things that Motion excels over Ae but not a lot, but where it does excel it does so by far.

Ae definitely has a far greater online community support and if you know Ae, and ideally a proper 3d app, Motion is so simple to learn. If you understand what is going on with programming, without being a programmer, then the ability to publish to FCPX is a god send that Ae doesn't have.

I can image Adobe have their eyes lit up in some way with these possibilities between Ae and Premiere.

If I can find the time I'll try to write up a comparison sometime soon.

NocoDave posted,

your are right Motion is nice little program, but it hasn't received much love since the update 3.
This is how I like to compare the two:
After Effects = Visual Effects
Apple Motion = Motion Graphics

Apple Motion fails in one of the simplest task in the visual effects, why it makes it not versatile.
Painting out objects.

Do you have any videos or examples of what you've done? i try looking for Motion Demo Reels from people but no one posts anything from it. It would just be refreshing to actually see someone doing something with the program

Well that gives you a idea how well Motion is used. I haven't seen Motion beeing used in any major projects.

Just small little corporate, education or personal projects which mainly templates are used.

Finding the time hasn't been easy but I'm currently on the first job since I started using "Motion" that I have been told has to be done in "AE". since starting to use "Motion" I've been using AE for certain things in combination, and it is definitely way more versatile. But this return to a complete project reminded me of when I first started using it. "AE" is a blank canvas and "Motion" is in itself an inspirational to work with. For me that's the main difference.
