I thought I'd break this off from tpaytons thread as his tutorial has some excellent stuff that could go a lot further than trying to make FCPX's trimming act close to Avid's, which is basically what I'm trying to do.
If anyone uses a jog shuttle they may like to try this and if anyone does I'd love to hear ideas on alternatives. I use a Logic Contour Shuttle Xpress and have been fine with the 5 buttons, but I have a feeling as I get to know the capabilities we have here I'll be wanting something with more buttons.
I have it set up like this:
Button 1 --- \ --- Selects both sides of an edit point for roll edit.
Button 2 --- [ --- Selects the outgoing side of an edit point for ripple edit.
Button 3 --- shift-/ --- Starts loop playback.
Button 4 --- ] --- Selects the incoming side of an edit point for ripple edit.
Button 5 --- shift-X --- Creates an extend edit.
An extra 2 buttons for the < and > keys would be nice, but it's simple enough to work them with my other hand.

FYI, the Euphonix MC Transport had always been supported by FCP X, and needs no tweaking. But with 13 buttons (23 with the function shift key), you could easily program it as you wanted. I've done some minor tweaking to it over time to expand it's abilities with FCP X. I may zip up that file and post it soon if anyone else uses the MC Transport.
Yes, any FCP 7 compatible control surface should work with FCP X.

I use the contour shuttle pro I will be making a new profile to add these to it.
I had already added extend edit, and nudge (,+.) and also top and tails (CTL + [ or ])
I am shooting a music video tomorrow, I will report back in the next week to see how the shuttle works with these buttons assigned.
Let us know how your experience goes.

I'm having issues with the loop playback behaviour that is a hindrance to this.
Once set it wants to stay with the initial positioning, even when re-engaging after an adjustment it wants to continue from it's initial state.
If the up/down arrow keys moved from edit to edit, but taken the trim and repositioned the loop centre point this could be a whole lot more economic and all the extra buttons shouldn't be necessary. I think I'll be leaving it for now and hopefully that will get changed. It's the only weak point in my work flow.
Feed back is on it's way and fingers are crossed.

The preview playback starts where ever the playhead is, or the skimmer. Turn of skimming and it will be where ever the playhead is. If you move the playhead, Shift-/ playback follows it.

I had a look, it seems I was getting erratic results/false impressions in relation to the skimmer. I love the skimmer for throwing down a rough edit really quickly, but then I don't use it when tightening things up anyway.
Turning it off still doesn't give the keyboard control that I'd like, but it looks like it could be easier to work with.
Thanks.
