Compound Clips Project-Event

Does anyone know a way to transfer a compound clip from a project to an event. I put a reasonably complex one together on the timeline that I can now see me using a lot. I don't want to sit and recreate it, I can't see a way to transfer it and if I create a new compound clip in the event library and try to copy and paste the content from the project version FCPX crashes.

Unfortunately you can't. This is why I stress to my students to think before creating one. Should it be created inside a Project or other Timeline? Or should it be created inside the Event? But yeah, that's the only way to do it at this point in time. Fill out the feedback page and tell Apple we need to be able to get Compound Clips created in Projects into an Event.

Personally, I think any Compound Clip created in a Project should automatically show up in the Project's default Event automatically.

As for crashing, try trashing prefs, and maybe deleting all the render files for that Project via the File menu.

I think whether it's created inside a project or another timeline is irrelevant. Then it would still appear as a project in the project library, either alone or as part of the main project and it's parts can still be copy and pasted from one to another. So this gives the flexibility necessary and doesn't really need the pre-thought.

Getting material from project to project works fine and getting material from events to projects works fine. Why getting material from a project to compound clip in an event doesn't is strange, maybe the split databases have a one way traffic limitation.

The crash happens even when I trashed my prefs and there are no render files for the project, thanks for the suggestion. The compound clip contains a lot of optical flow retimed clips, so you made me wonder and I tried copying un-timed clips from a project to an event compound clip, it still crashes. But if it can't be done it doesn't matter whether it stays open or crashes anyway.

Personally, I think any Compound Clip created in a Project should automatically show up in the Project's default Event automatically.

That was my first thought when I noticed the issue, and I think I'm with you in that. But I'm going to take time to consider whether I'd prefer that or to have the control over the manual option to send a compound clip from a project to an event before filling out feedback forms.

One thing that popped to my head which my or may not be relevant since I'm not at my computer to test this, is what is the render settings of the compound clip vs the project? Could pasting into a compound clip that wants to re-render everything freak out FCPX?

The last thing to try is maybe break apart the compound clip, or enter the compound clip and copy and paste the contents to the compound clip in your event library.

I don't know if you've tried both of those things but maybe it could work

This is what I had tried already, neither work.

I just checked to make sure the relevant render settings matched, they did, so sadly that never made any changes. I'm trying to think of anything else that might, even behind the scenes, relate to getting information from the project database into the event database, if there is anything it might be a clue.

I've never had problems dropping Compound Clips into other Project timelines. It's treated like a regular clip. If you open it into it's own Timeline, those renders are separate from the Project Timeline. Each "Timeline" has it's own specific render files.

If I drop a 1080 Compound into an SD Project or Compound, the 1080 will get re-sized, re-rendered, etc. I do this pretty often.

What are your hardware specs Noco? Are you in SL or Lion? What FCP version?

We have our wires crossed here, I'll try and explain better.

What you say above isn't a problem, try this.

1. Create a compound clip in the Event Library.
2. Open any project and copy a selection of clips.
3. Open the previously made Compound Clip
4. Try to paste into it.

This route is trying to get information from the project database to the event database, putting a Compound Clip from 1 project to another is going from project database to project database (works fine) and putting one to a project from the event library is going from the event database to the project database (also works fine).

I'm running a basic 21.5" mid 2011 iMac (2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB), Firewire 800 Raid 0, OSX 10.7.2, FCPX 10.0.2

I just did, works just fine for me, copy and paste with no problems. You should be able to copy and paste from any Timeline to any other Timeline, period.

I assume a few things:
* All of your Events and Projects are on the FW drive, not the system drive.
* You have at least 10-15% of that drive's capacity as free space, same goes for your internal OS drive.
* You've recently run Disk Utility to "repair" all connected drives.

If worse comes to worse you can easily move the FCP X app to the trash, go into the Mac App Store, Purchased tab, and re-install it. But that's just weird you can't do those copy/paste functions. You should be able to copy/paste from anywhere to anywhere.

Thanks Ben, seems I have a system problem. All Events and Projects are on the FW right enough and there's way more than 10-15% free, system drive too.

I'll run disk utility and see what's up. Fingers crossed.

I ran disk repair, no luck, reinstalled FCPX and still no luck. I never thought to try this first, but I created a compound clip in a different event, proceeded from there and everything works fine.

I've tried a few different things with different projects and different events and everything is great except for in this event, could is have got corrupt?

It is possible the Event or Project is corrupted. I've heard of this happening before, but not in awhile. What if you, from inside FCP X, duplicate it, or copy it to anther drive, then delete the original?

I just gave both a try, it still won't work. Luckily it's nothing really important that I'm working on with this, but it would still be nice to find way to fix it incase it happens again.
