SSD is technically faster than even 7200rpm HDD.
SSD is more expensive than HDD.
HDD RAID can achieve more than adequate speeds for editing as a more affordable price.
Not all SSDs and HDDs are created equal.

If you want better performance, consider upgrading to FCPX 10.4.10. Starting with 10.4.7 performance was improved significantly due to Metal optimization on effects, but also for certain rendering and encoding tasks. As always it's good to back up your libraries and previous version of Final Cut Pro.app in /Applications. That way you can revert to the prior version if any problems.
In general rendering is CPU and GPU-intensive, not IO intensive. So you normally should not expect a SSD to vastly improve rendering time. However the SSD can improve general performance, esp. if the library and cache are placed on the SSD.
Almost any external SSD will be better than a rotating single-spindle drive. However some SSDs are better than others. I've had good results with this 2TB unit, which does about 1,000 MB/sec and maintains good performance under sustained heavy writes:
Many other lower-cost SSDs can degrade under heavy writing, either due to thermal issues or if the internal design is QLC (what Samsung calls QVO). For QLC drives the internal writing rate isn't that fast and the mfg works around this using a limited amount of TLC cache, but when that is exhausted the writing rate can slow down.
After loading the data, most editing workflows are read-oriented. However when dealing with video you sometimes want to rapidly offload data to the SSD or copy from one drive to another. In those cases SSDs subject to thermal or cache issues can slow down dramatically.
