Hi I have the right cables wifewire and Thunderbolt but I dont get the picture/film in the screen when I am importing the files. My Mac is Macbook Pro 2015. Is there a driver to my Mac that I need? What shall I do?

Try capturing using the QuickTime player. Use File>New Movie Recording and selecting the connected camera.

1. Launch Quicktime player
2. Go to the File menu
3. Select New Movie Recording
4. From the drop-down menu to the right of the Record button, select your video source.

If you don't see the video source you've connected to your Mac, then your Mac doesn't recognize that connection.

There should not be any drivers to install and the Fire Wire to Thunderbolt adapter should work. They way FCPX sees the ADVC110 should work with your Sony Mini DV Cam.

Hi. Thank you for your help but shall I accept that my Sony camcorder is not supported by FCP?
I managed to import the film/media through iMovie. I know that is nor the right way...

Does FCPX recognize your Sony camera the way FCPX recognized my Canopus ADVC 110? It should.

On the assumption that you are connecting from the camera to the Mac with Firewire to Thunderbolt, looking at the user manual for your camera (www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/res/m...s/3080/30803681M.pdf), on page 244 it shows how to switch the video output to the Firewire using the A/V -> DV OUT setting, which must be ON. You may already have done this, but just checking.

After you have switched this, it may be as well to power-down the camera, and repower it, and check that the setting has ‘stuck’.

In my experience with Firewire, it’s quite often the case that connecting the camera first and then powering-up the device or camera may work best.

It’s worth restarting FCPX once you have checked this. If no joy, leave the camera powered and connected, reboot and run FCPX. Firewire can be a bit temperamental…

If it’s all working, the camera should appear at the top left of the Import window. When you start importing from tape, each shot is saved as a separate clip, which is exactly what you want for editing!

By the way, i.Link is Sony’s name for Firewire.

based on Rinaldos description did you manage to get your problems resolved with transferring video files from Sony DCR TRV33E to FCP?

I have completed all steps as you have suggested below with iMovie however the DCR camera is not listed as a source next to the FaceTime HD camera after click Import Media . 

The list of DV cameras who are compatible with iMovie and Final Cut Prods not have the Sony DCR DCR TRV33E included. Should it work anyway?

It would be great to get your ideas of what next step to take?

No DV or HDV cameras are listed. The page only says

Final Cut Pro is compatible with most MiniDV tape-based camcorders using DV and HDV formats, which use a FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.LINK) cable to transfer video.
