There was a thread here awhile ago about a similar issue, but can't find it.

Recently started using a QNAP Thunderbolt networked NAS, and when importing original media from an SD card, files have NOT been going to the library. Instead they are imported to "Final Cut Original Media," a root level folder created by FCP on the NAS. The library contains only the symlinks to the original media.

In the Import Preferences, I have "Copy to library storage location" checked.

Oddly, in the Media Import window, there's an option I have never seen before, "Copy to Media Vol." Media Vol being the volume I created on the NAS for FCP. I have this option checked.

The other other option in the Media Import window is "Leave files in place." I don't check this. Should I be?

I want the original media imported to the library, not the Final Cut Original Media folder. What am I missing?

Select the Library.
Go to the Inspector.
Click the ModifySettings button.
Be sure you have "Library" selected for Media.

Thanks.

That was simple, if not intuitive. So the lesson for importing is:

1) Inspector: Decide the LOCATION of the imported files in the Inspector.
2) Media Import: Tell FCP in the Media Import window HOW to import the files.
3) The Preferences Import settings don't matter all that much, if you do steps 1 and 2.

Import settings in Preferences ONLY apply when you drag-and-drop media from a Finder window into FCPX. In which case they do matter. Otherwise, you have those same options in the Import window to deal with.

Thanks. That clears it up. Three different but similar methods to achieve three different but similar things. If one doesn't know the differences then one wouldn't necessarily know when the differences apply. What happened to useful contextual menus and guides? (That's rhetorical.)
