We’re looking at using Lumberjack System. The price to test it out is great. It’s putting all of the time into implementing it that we’re in the process of determining if it’s worth it. I’ve not heard much chatter about it and coupling that with their bad website and poorly produced informational videos I’m a bit hesitant.
The last thing we want to do is 1) put in time on a product that isn’t worth the time or 2) fall in love with a product that isn’t selling and have it go out of business in the near future.
Does anyone here use it? Is is great? If you do use it could you easily live without it? I’d love to hear from people that are not part of the company that makes Lumberjack System.
I have many of the same questions about this. Seems like it could really save time. And I really appreciate the effort that this company has put into it. But I've downloaded the trial and it is very complex for my little brain.
I'm willing to soldier on and see if I can learn it. But... is ANYONE using it with success?
So... it appears that no one is using Lumberjack System. Or if they are, they don't want to say anything bad about it because the creators are such nice people. (The silence on this topic speaks loudly if not clearly.) So I guess my decision is to not waste any time trying to learn how to use it.
Yeah, we use it here. we used to primary use just the Lumberyard app. We used it for bringing transcripts into fcpx as metadata on the interviews we do. It works well, but when builder came out they removed the service we use from lumberyard, and moved it to builder. Haven't had any large batches to use since that change, so I can't really comment on builder just yet... but I should probably test it out...
We are using it for documentary work as well. Big and small.
I love having the transcripts inside fcpx, even though it is a bit clunky. And I LOVE the magic keywords. I work with academics and the way magic keywords helped "code" their research helped a lot. And the ability as an editor to just search for a word, and then be able to go straight to that part of the interview was tremendous.
That being said, I'm gonna have to try it again in builder. see what changed. See if still works.
If you have any follow up questions feel free to ask.
We were primarily interested in realtime keywording and notes. As a result of our pretty extensive preproduction, we shoot with a story structure in mind. Perhaps we might try using transcripts later, but just trying to figure out how to use it has been pretty confusing. Not sure if it will help or hinder. (We are often a crew of three and are working in remote places like the Amazon Basin. Our audio guy would have to both monitor audio and run Lumberjack on an iPad.)
Have you every used it to add keywords and notes realtime?
We haven't tried the realtime keywording yet, but we have thought about it. We too travel with a small 3 person crew as well. (though not as remote as the amazon basin). In theory it should work as advertised. The reason we don't really use it in real time is more logistical. We would rather use a 2nd camera for interviews or vérité shooting.
