Hi al.

I was getting set to buy a MB P and then Apple came out with the option to get either of these two configurations. They say it's 45% faster than with the 560x card.

So is it worth the extra 250-350 $$$ for this upgrade? I plan on working with more 4k video from here forward. My plan was to have this replace the 2010 MacPro I now use for editing..

Obviously no one has tested this out since they are so new, but am seeking opinions.

Thanks.

JL

In my opinion, if you are set on editing with a MBP, I'd get the best graphics card offered, especially for that price upgrade.

Look at YouTube, there’s some tests already. All that I have seen seems to indicate that the MacBook Pros with the vega cards run much better and cooler. I’m a bit bummed I got mine before they were available :(

Sorry it's taken me a bit to get back, but thanks so much for those replies. I'm leaning more and more to the Vega set up (16? 20?) when I do this and just be done with it. Also looking at some raided GTech 12GB Thunderbolt 3 Ext. drive and monitor TBD. This should hold me into the twilight of my career B) :cheer:

and at ~6:00min the question of whether the upgrade was as worth while...

Decisions. Decisions.

Regarding that comparison video: If you read the comments, he did note that he had background rendering on, so of course there were few differences! He re-did his test and noted that the Vega did it around 2x faster. It was one timeline, but pretty demonstrative of the difference.

Hey guys.

I wimped out. I just got an off the shelf MBp 2.6/512GB/Radeon 560. I think I did ok. Quite a difference in speed from my old 2010 MacPro, and takes up a lot less desktop real estate. Apple lists this for $2799US on their site. Last week when I bough there was a promo for $200 off, so $2599. Yesterday I received an email that had another $100 off, called Microcenter where I bought everything last week, and they matched that and credited me an additional $100US. So new MBp for $2499US!!!

If the OWC dock doesn't work I may be using the savings to get a REALLY expensive dock :pinch:
