Hello - I am trying to do a gut check to make sure what I am experiencing is on par or at least close and I don't have a settings or machine problem. I am currently working with a flare plugin (from core melt TrackX package) but I had similar experience with a customer 3D title. My scene is a static picture with three flares that are keyed to go from nothing to strong glow then back to nothing. Each time I adjust a flare - say move it to the correct location on the picture or adjust the glow size for the key location, it takes up to 5 minutes to render.

FCPX is basically useless while this rending is going on.

My hardware/sw specs are below - like I said, just wondering if that amount of time seems normal.

I am also wondering if there is a setting to help with this that will not impact the final product. I am somewhat new to FCPX.

FCPX 10.3.4 on a MacBook Pro late 2013 2.6ghz w/ 16gb ram and the dual Nvidia Geforce750 2GB + IRIS - library for the small home movie resides on the internal 500gb SSD drive.

Yeah, 3D and text can take a long time to render. But on the other hand, most of the time you don't need to render for playback.

Go to Preferences, to Playback, and turn OFF Background Rendering. Eats up drive space and isn't needed most of the time. If you need to render for playback, only render the section of the Timeline you need, when you need it.

Thanks guru - what dictates when I do vs when I don't need to render for playback? If I dont, I assume the rendering takes place when I finalize the project?

White/gray dots across the top of the Timeline show that a render is needed for 100% no dropped frames playback. But that's rarely absolutely necessary. When do you need to manually trigger render for playback (under the Modify menu)? When playback stutters too much to be productive. Simple as that.

When you export/share a timeline, FCPX writes a file from scratch. Some time back I did some tests with my editor at macProVideo and we found FCPX exports files almost as fast with no render files, as when it has timeline render files available to it. The time difference was not enough to be significant. Plus, when you add in the time you waited for the timeline to render, then you're export with a rendered timeline is much, much longer than exporting with no timeline renders.

Technically in FCPX you "render" a timeline only to help with playback. You "Export" or "Share" a file to write a new stand-alone file on your hard drive to use. I know enough other apps use the term "render" to also mean "export", it gets confusing.

In fact, once you turn off Background Rendering, select the Library in the Browser, File menu, select "Delete All Generated Library Files" and delete ALL render files. You could end up saving valuable drive space.

That isn't normal.
Such adjustments should be in real-time.

I'm the guy on this board claiming the weakest hardware (2012 macMini) in use - lens flares are basically a handful of connected, opaque circles - no rocket science, lil' computation.
Particles are a neckbraker, the Align-to behaviour, matryoshkaed compounds (compound in a compound in a …) too, but 'simple' lens-flares?

do you apply the effect to a clip? Not a 'nested' one?

I simply take a still image and drag it to the timeline. Then I drag the SliceX Flare effect on top of it. Then I move the flare to the location on the image I would like it to reside. In this case, it is a flare at the end of my daughters Harry Potter wand that "glows". The render clock goes for about 3-5 minutes with each movement. It is happening in the "background" but the machine is seriously slowed while this is going on. Nothing else running. I shut down and restarted with just FCPX.

If this should not be expected, I would like to know how to troubleshoot it.

On my top-spec 2017 iMac 27, the ver. 2.28.2 TrackX "Track Flare" effect is extremely sluggish. To render a 10-sec clip composed of a single photo and three keyframed flare moves takes about 1 min, 10 sec. Yet without rendering the timeline it is so laggy it's impossible to tell what it's doing.

It appears to be a fundamental characteristic of that CoreMelt effect, nothing wrong with your machine or how you're using it.

Will I save drive space doing this on all my "completed" projects? Any downside?
