What do you folks think about the new iMacs for editing? What's your take on the new graphics card?

Buy now or wait for new towers next year?

Well, these will be the IveyBridge chipsets. Not sure about which GPU they're using.

As Ridiculously thin as it is, I think it will be as capable as a current iMac, except faster and with a max of 32 instead of 16GB RAM available.

Since I'm working on a late 2011 iMac right now, I'm happy to wait and see what next year brings. In a perfect world, it will be the MacPro replacement and a couple of Retina Cinema Displays.

Yikes! The mind boggles...

High end NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX.
Low end NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M.
With GT 650M and GTX 660M for the in between models.

I've been waiting for the new model to replace my trusty 2007. For whatever reason, I decided against ordering the new one, but choose the old one though.

The announced model gave me a thinking of "nice, but so wha?t". The GPU must be cool, and that thing surely flies. However, I'm not sure if the screen will be without flaws... and with the reduced glare, I can't shave anymore in the office.

Always think very carefully about picking up older hardware. If you want the machine to last for a long time, you're best to buy as new an beefy as you can. The new machine allows for 2x the RAM, and faster CPU and GPU. Buying today's machine may buy you an extra year or two before it's not supported by a necessary OS update, or as minimum system requirements go up on the software you use.

If you get the new machine, you can always take it back if you find it's giving you problems within the return window.

No firewire. Guess I'll need a thunderbolt to firewire converter for my existing external drives. Wish the thunderbolt to esata converters were cheaper.

You are right, but I'm in a bit weird situation, living on a rather remote Pacific island. Next Apple Store is some 3000 miles away, so I rather buy something trusted.
FCP X runs pretty well on my 2010 MBP, and even the five year old iMac has nearly enough power for Premiere CS6 (and ran beautifully with FCS 2). I didn't see the need for this über machine.

Wow, you're living my dream! Please say it's not Bora Bora...

Apple stores are going to be useless to you regardless of where you live if you're buying anything other than a stock config machine. You'd have to ship it back whether its a new one, the current model or a refurb unit.

How long can you afford to wait? Because they're not shipping 'til December, it's probably going to be nigh impossible to get a config'd 27" until January anyways. But I'd say by the end of the year, those who have gotten them (individuals or reviewers) will I'm sure have let people know if there's any big problems.

Devil's Advocate (who's waiting for next year's MacPro replacement)

Sadly, it is "only" Saipan. Not much of tropical beauty left, but the weather is nice, and the Pacific warm and clean enough for swimming year through.

I have been waiting too much already for upgrading my old iMac. I had started the paperwork mill (working for the gummint) already, but put a hold on it when I heard rumors of the model change. What I saw this morning didn't wow me enough to wait another two months, plus the whole purchasing process from scratch. I couldn't have expected that machine on my desk before March next year.

Well why not?
But since R3D is now supported (officially) and the iMac has not to insert a REDRocket card. I would suggest to hold up until we see what Apple will introduce in XXX.

I would suggest the 27" with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX with 2GB of GDDR5, 3TB Fusion Drive with 32GB RAM.

When the rMBP went with the soldered in RAM I had a feeling the iMac was going to go the same way. When they showed inside it definitely looked like it has. Goodbye to cheap RAM upgrades for the iMac if it's right enough.

I think the 8GB RAM minimum was inevitable as was the Flash option. I'll be holding off to see what's coming after too.

Lets not forget its only the 21" iMac that has the non upgradable ram.

The 27" iMac can be beefed up to 32GB by the user.

That's not so bad for the moment, I recon the 27" will change too over time as they get that bulge in the back thinner. But I'm sure the RAM options will get cheaper with time too as it happens.

I wouldn't expect to see it slim down too much more in the near future. It's already insanely thin. Plus, don't forget they're going to be trying to stuff a Retina display into this thing in the next year or two.
