Hey whats up guys! We shot this music video at night in the rain w/ our new music artist & wanted to get some input! Whole video was shot our canon T3I w/ 35MM F/2 and 17-40mm L F/4 lenses. I edited this w/ Final Cut Pro X & used a mixture of AE/MBLooks for the correction/color/grading.
This is her first time performing in a music video, what do you guys think? Its about 2 min long, & we've had about a year/halfs worth of experience with filming/editing.

Opening shot's great, also the interior, but you begin to lose me on the long profile shot of the car, there's a basic composition problem, our eyes are drawn to where the headlights are pointing, as a subject - grass & a lamp-post is dead. I would prefer the car to be parked in the pouring rain in front of a night club. It fits your message & demographic better. If the logistics for that are too difficult put the car on a busy street with lots of lights going by & or twinkling in the background. She's in the passenger seat, implying she's perhaps waiting for someone. At your current location it looks like she's waiting at the cemetery.

Sound production is excellent. Her vocals have a dulcet tone. Personally, I could do without the swearing, I think it really limits your marketability & hamstrings your artist, who has such a great marketable look & sound. Business-wise, why cut her off at the knees like that?

More on the interiors, all your focal work is giving us tiny little bokeh circles from the droplets, whereas if you were in front of that club you could get some beautiful big soft bokeh colored circles = gorgeous. Check the opening scene of Crash. Also we're shooting some shots thru the glass giving us droplet shadows on the girl, I'd prefer that window down, shield your camera & track in thru the open window. In other words, don't put spots on her face.

Also on the interior shots I'm getting a very distracting little red light reflection in the upper left frame. When we switch to the studio scenes, I don't care for the lighting. Love how she's lit in the car, but that appeal drops off immediately in the studio shots. Your angle combined with the lighting & or color treatment lessens her value rather than increasing it. She looks much better in the car.

Your opening titles & the first pan thru the headlights look like a million bucks, then it depreciates rapidly. What on earth do you think the chain link fence brings to the film? There's a weird little unnecessary cut in there too. I know, I know, you want to show the rain on something. Not that.

The grass is entirely uninteresting & makes the production look like a high-school film project. If you wanted to add some real value, figure out how to do your slow tracking shot with time lapse overlay of other cars going by in fast or slow motion. If she is in a slow cocoon inside that car, show some rain drops falling in slow motion, while the rest of the world is in fast motion, that might be interesting. All I'm saying is, creatively... work harder to develop something memorable.

The camera appears to be working well for you, as well as your competency in the software. Not sure what you needed AE for, looks like all of that could have been done in FCPX.

All in all, it shows a lot of promise. Thanks for sharing, MMG.
