This was my first edit with FCP. I am working on another but can't figure out if or how to get an effect to track an object. Please if anyone can direct me to a tutorial or at least let me know what it's called.

Provide some direction if you can

Motion has a good tracker for this type of thing.

Thanks BenB. I am slowly getting it. Wants I get passed the terminology I will get better. (key frame, correlation, ...) plus what the options do. Right now it's just a lot of clicking with not much happening.

Give tracking in Apple Motion in your favorite search engine and you will find some simple tutorials.
There isn't much detailed info out there guessing has something to do with the limitation... Mocha cough Mocha cough...

For simple tracking like this, Motion is more than adiquate. If you want to get in to more planar type tracking, yes, Mocha is the way to go. Motion and AE would both be lame without Mocha for the high end work. But for what you're doing, for what most folks do, Motion's tracking is really nice. Here's some free help.

also cinema 4d, a 3d creation program, just added a camera tracker in their latest version. mocha is already expensive and doesn't let you create the graphics. cinema 4d will do a 3d really well and might help in the tracking part of it.

Blender has it too now, and is a bit cheaper than Mocha or Cinema 4d.

I just downloaded blender last week but haven't messed with it yet. I am still working off of the free trial of FCPX. I need to start figuring out what direction I want to go before investing in FCP. Thanks for all the help.

Just for the record, the effect you're trying to duplicate is super easy and fast in Motion. Larger 3D apps would be overkill for that sort of thing. If you want to really get into 3D modeling, Blender for sure, or Cheetah. Simple motion graphics, Motion or AE. Also consider Pixelmator as an awesome and cheaper alternative to Photoshop.
