Cinema Grade from Denver Riddle - Thoughts? 19 Sep 2018 11:46 #97113
It looks really awesome. Has anyone besides me been following the daily videos and sales build up? I want to try it out and see if it lives up to the hype. Although the addition of the film looks LUTs doesn't impress, but then, I've never been impressed by "look" LUTs, they don't give the same results on clips from different sources with different characteristics. But they sell, so I'm sure someone is loving them.
So, Cinema Grade, is it as ground breaking to color grading as Denver makes it out to be? Thoughts? coming.colorgradingcentral.com/story/ |

It looks interesting but...
I always find the language used to describe it wrong. Grade like a Pro easely... Make grades like blockbuster films... Who wants to do that and give the same look again. It all implies that grading is easy and with a minimum of work you can become en expert. Like: Become a cartoonist in 20 days. Drawing is easy a 20 step book. etc... Soon on the shelves: Learning color science in a Flash. This being said I haven't tried it so I'm not talking about the product. |

I purchased it and am using it now. A lot of nice features, but one disappointment is that there are no scopes in the base correction and final grade modes. There are in shot matching mode (thankfully), but in order to establish correct levels for base correction, you have to make your adjustments by eye and then after sending the clip back to the FCPX viewer look at the FCPX scopes. Usually more adjustment is needed, so back to the Cinema Grade UI to adjust. This back and forth is unusable for me, but I'm hoping the addition of realtime scopes in all modes is a future update.
The workaround is to base correct in FCPX, and then use Cinema Grade for final grading. Creating history....one edit at a time !

Thanks for the feedback dgwvideo. As you probably know there is a feedback form built right within the app. We are already working on scopes (we already have them written in the Shot Matching page) so you can look for that in a future update. Thanks again for supporting us and we look forward to seeing how it works on your projects
