Xsan for FCPX was created by Abercrombie
Hey guys!
Inspired by the Sam Mestman talk about 4k and FCPX, I thought about replacing our qnap nas with a Xsan solution. We're currently using sparse bundles to store our events and projects. But the performance is a bit low since we started to edit more and more red 4k r3d footage.
First off: I have no idea what I'm doing, so please correct me if I'm wrong!
Here's the setup I come up with:
- Mac Mini Core i7 2,3GHz, 4GB, 1TB (I might add more RAM and a Fusion Drive later) 700€ *
- Promise Pegasus R6 18TB Thunderbolt 2.100€ *
- 4x Promise SANLink (three clients plus server) 4x 570€ = 2.280€ *
- Fibre Channel Cables 250€*
- 4GbE Switch (Promise has only very old ones in his SANLink Compatibility List. I will have a look later) ~1.000€
- OSX server tools for xsan 18€
(* all prices are without tax or shipping. found on google)
Am I missing something? Has anyone tried a similar setup to get a san? Maybe a cheaper one? I would really appreciate your feedback!
All the best,
Cromb

I'm not sure whether Synology is adding SAN support to their OS, but here is a new 4GbE 8 bay NAS:
