Tiffen update their digital filter suite Dfx v3 for Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5

tiffen_FCPX

We're pretty sure we've used the London bus analogy here on FCP.co before, but products from different manufacturers do seem to be released in batches. This time it's Tiffen with an FCPX friendly upgrade to their award winning pack of filters.

We spotted this one last week, but it got slightly eclipsed by the other higher profile releases. Billed as 'The fastest, easiest, most powerful, versatile, image editing software you will ever own" Tiffen Dfx Version 3 now adds support for Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5.

“Our Tiffen Dfx v3 digital filter suite is a critical part of the compositing and effects production workflow for video editors and motion graphic artists. Having support for the Final Cut Pro and Motion community ensures that these artists are able to use their Tiffen Dfx filters when they make the move to the latest Apple pro video application offerings,” comments Steve Tiffen, President and CEO, The Tiffen Company.

The filter pack has won many awards, but a licence for the video version costs a rather large $599. If you are a regular reader of FCP.co, you'll know that we think pricing plugins above the actual price of the host app will harm sales. Having said that, one licence will also run with Adobe® After Effects®, Adobe Premiere® Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro 6 & 7 and Avid® editing systems if installed and activated on the same machine.

In our rather long hunt for a demo video, we came across this one from last year that we hope is still relevant. Checkout the Dfx page on the Tiffen site for a list of the filters

There is a free 15 day trial version of the filter suite to download from the Tiffen site. We would love to hear from anybody who's given the pack a spin, it might be pricey but it would be good to see in FCPX in action.

An instructional PDF on the product can also be downloaded, check your printer has a lot of paper in the tray as its over 400 pages long.

New in Tiffen Dfx Version 3.0
Boasting enhanced multi-processor acceleration for faster interaction and rendering of images, 10+ brand new filters for optical effects, interface improvements, and more, Tiffen Dfx v3 takes still images to the next level of visual brilliance. New filter and effects capabilities include:

Color Shadow: Creates a high contrast image overlayed with a gradient, simulating the look and feel of those colorful iPod® commercials.

- DeBand: Removes banding artifacts from an image by smoothing pixels in banded areas while retaining detail. Banding frequently occurs, in blue skies for instance, with DSLR’s as well as digital cameras. DeBand effectively smooths out this unwanted banding.

DeBlock: Removes blocking artifacts created as a result of high compression factors, such as overly compressed JPG images which often cause square blocking artifacts.

DeNoise: Grain and noise from digital cameras, whether still or video, is a common problem. DeNoise removes the grain and noise while still retaining detail.

Film Stocks: Simulates 113 different color and black & white photographic film stocks. For those desiring the look of either old or current film stocks, there are simulations of many of the popular brands from Kodak®, Fuji®, Agfa®, Polaroid®, and Illford®.

Glow Darks: Glows and grows the dark areas of an image, creating a stylized, dreamy dark glow.

Key Light: Relights images with a directional or point light. Changing the lighting after an image has been photographed gives the photographer/editor control to fix or enhance their images, as well as create interesting lighting effects.

Rays: Creates stunning and realistic light ray effects quickly and easily. Rays can add shafts of light streaming through clouds, rays filtering through a forest canopy, beams of light on a foggy night, or rays shooting through an interior window. Rays adds a striking and dramatic quality to any image.

Texture: Applies textures to an image for a stylized look. Adding texture to an image is a great way to create a unique and customized look.

Match: Matches the color, detail, gradient, and tone of one image and applies it to another.

I have also worked as a broadcast and corporate editor for over 30 years, starting on one inch tape, working through many formats, right up to today's NLEs.

Under the name Idustrial Revolution, I have written and sold plugins for Final Cut Pro for 13 years.

great house giveaway 2020

2020 has been busy, the beginning of the year was finishing off a new property series (cut on FCP) for Channel 4 called The Great House Giveaway. I also designed and built the majority of the graphics as Motion templates. It has been a great success and the shows grabbed more viewers in the 4pm weekday slot than any previous strand. It has been recommissioned by C4 for 60 episodes, including prime-time versions and five themed programmes.

Tour de france 2020
Although both were postponed to later in the year, I worked again on ITV's coverage of the Tour de France and La Vuelta. 2020 was my 25th year of editing the TdF and my 20th year as lead editor. The Tour was the first broadcast show to adopt FCPX working for multiple editors on shared storage.

BBC snooker the crucible

BBC's Snooker has played a big part in my life, I've been editing tournament coverage since 1997. I'm proud to be part of a very creative team that has pioneered many new ideas and workflows that are now industry standard in sports' production. This is currently an Adobe Premiere edit.

amazon kindle BF

Covid cancelled some of the regular corporate events that I edit such as trade shows & events. I was lucky however to edit, from home, on projects for Amazon Kindle, Amazon Black Friday, Mastercard and very proud to have helped local charitable trust Kendall & Wall secure lottery funding.

As for software, my weapon of choice is Final Cut Pro and Motion, but I also have a good knowledge and broadcast credits with Adobe Premiere Pro, MOGRT design and Photoshop.

Plugin Design & Development

I'm the creative force behind Idustrial Revolution, one of the oldest Final Cut Pro plugin developers. It hosts a range of commercial and free plugins on the site. One free plugin was downloaded over a thousand times within 24 hours of release.

I also take on custom work, whether it is adapting an existing plugin for a special use or designing new plugins for clients from scratch. Having a good knowledge of editing allows me to build-in flexibility and more importantly, usability.

FCP.co

Now in its 10th year and 4th redesign, running FCP.co has given me knowledge on how to run a large CMS- you are currently reading my bio from the database! Although it sounds corny, I am pretty well up on social media trends & techniques, especially in the video sector. The recent Covid restrictions has enabled live FCP.co shows online. This involves managing a Zoom Webinar through Restream.io to YouTube and Facebook.

The Future

I'm always open to new ideas and opportunities, so please get in touch at editor (at) fcp.co. I've judged film competitions, presented workflow techniques to international audiences and come up with ideas for TV shows and software programs!
