Red Giant release Universe, the community driven ever-expanding collection of plugins

red giant universe

The beta has finished, Red Giant has announced that their new collection of plugins called Universe has now been officially released. There are multiple price plans and subscriptions available.

It was a great idea when announced, Red Giant's new set of plugins will be updated on a regular basis based on customer demand from the community. There's 50 filters and transitions to start with and there are many ways to own the set, by buying outright or renting the plugins.

What makes Universe different? First of all they are all cross platform and cross NLE. This means they will run on OS X and Windows within their respective applications Final Cut Pro X, Motion, After Effects and Premiere Pro.

'More dazzle, less hassle with Red Giant Universe. If you’re a video editor on deadline, you’ll find smoothlooking new transitions ready to go. Motion Graphic artists will find endless creative inspiration with unique glows, flares, and brand new generators. All Universe tools harness your system's GPU for speedy turnarounds on OS X and Windows, in many popular host apps. Once you’re logged in, Red Giant Link will keep your tools up to date, all backed by our Red Pledge. The basic membership is completely free and gives you access to a streamlined library of creative tools, or try a Premium subscription that offers more sophisticated effects for $10/month.'

Want to know what you get for the different pricing plans? Red Giant have made this handy graphic. We would go for Universe Lifetime as buying outright works out at better value in the long run.

Here are the Universe bullet points:

●Free essentials! Basic membership is free. Download a set of creative and practical tools that never expire. Get tools that are useful, not just free, and are backed by our Red Pledge: "No Hassles, just Happiness.”

●Flexible plans for every budget. Want more? Get a Premium plan as low as $8/month or a onetime fee that gives you access to more advanced professional tools. Choose from Monthly, Annual or Classic plans.

●Tools for editors, designers, and VFX artists. Whether you're an editor seeking slick transitions,
a compositor pulling together meticulous details, or a motion graphics designer creating edgy new graphics for your client, you'll find a full set of tools in Universe. Easily share those tools between team workstations or with outside freelancers.

●Keeps on giving. Development never sleeps! We'll add more Free and Premium tools to the collection throughout the year, making your membership richer over time, but your plan stays the same low price.

●Creative consistency. Universe is fully crossplatform and hostapp friendly, so every plugin is available for After Effects; Premiere Pro on OS X and Windows; and Final Cut Pro X and Motion on OS X. Design effects and transitions within your favorite postproduction software and OS with consistent results.

●GPU acceleration. Universe plugins are built to take optimal advantage of the speed and power of your graphics card for faster effects rendering. This means that 1080p effects can render at frames per second, saving you precious time when you’re ready to output.

●Pixelperfect quality. Made for professionals working in broadcast, feature films and commercial postproduction, Universe delivers 32bit floatingpoint rendering for ultrasmooth gradients, perfect edges and multisampling features that will please the most demanding clients.

●Lifetime Plan Pay once and put recurring charges behind you. You’ll get free updates to all tools in the Universe Product line and there will be no expiration for how long you can use the tools. They'll all still render perfect output: no red watermarks and no worries about future payments. Your tools never expire and should always work within the Host Apps supported in Universe Updates.

Top Blogger Thought Leader

I am the Editor-in-Chief of FCP.co and have run the website since its inception ten years ago.

I have also worked as a broadcast and corporate editor for over 30 years, starting on one inch tape, working through many formats, right up to today's NLEs.

Under the name Idustrial Revolution, I have written and sold plugins for Final Cut Pro for 13 years.

I was made a Freeman of Lichfield through The Worshipful Company of Smiths (established 1601). Though I haven't yet tried to herd a flock of sheep through the city centre!

Current Editing

great house giveaway 2020

2020 has been busy, the beginning of the year was finishing off a new property series (cut on FCP) for Channel 4 called The Great House Giveaway. I also designed and built the majority of the graphics as Motion templates. It has been a great success and the shows grabbed more viewers in the 4pm weekday slot than any previous strand. It has been recommissioned by C4 for 60 episodes, including prime-time versions and five themed programmes. The shows have also been nominated for a 2021 BAFTA.

Tour de france 2020
Although both were postponed to later in the year, I worked again on ITV's coverage of the Tour de France and La Vuelta. 2020 was my 25th year of editing the TdF and my 20th year as lead editor. The Tour was the first broadcast show to adopt FCPX working for multiple editors on shared storage.

BBC snooker the crucible

BBC's Snooker has played a big part in my life, I've been editing tournament coverage since 1997. I'm proud to be part of a very creative team that has pioneered many new ideas and workflows that are now industry standard in sports' production. This is currently an Adobe Premiere edit.

amazon kindle BF

Covid cancelled some of the regular corporate events that I edit such as trade shows & events. I was lucky however to edit, from home, on projects for Amazon Kindle, Amazon Black Friday, Mastercard and very proud to have helped local charitable trust Kendall & Wall secure lottery funding.

As for software, my weapon of choice is Final Cut Pro and Motion, but I also have a good knowledge and broadcast credits with Adobe Premiere Pro, MOGRT design and Photoshop.

Plugin Design & Development

I'm the creative force behind Idustrial Revolution, one of the oldest Final Cut Pro plugin developers. It hosts a range of commercial and free plugins on the site. One free plugin was downloaded over a thousand times within 24 hours of release.

I also take on custom work, whether it is adapting an existing plugin for a special use or designing new plugins for clients from scratch. Having a good knowledge of editing allows me to build-in flexibility and more importantly, usability.

Now in its 10th year and 4th redesign, running FCP.co has given me knowledge on how to run a large CMS- you are currently reading my bio from the database! Although it sounds corny, I am pretty well up on social media trends & techniques, especially in the video sector. The recent Covid restrictions has enabled live FCP.co shows online. This involves managing a Zoom Webinar through Restream.io to YouTube and Facebook.

The Future

I'm always open to new ideas and opportunities, so please get in touch at editor (at) fcp.co. I've judged film competitions, presented workflow techniques to international audiences and come up with ideas for TV shows and software programs!
