Apple Announce Updates to Final Cut Pro X, Compressor and Motion for NAB 2018

Apple has announced that updates of Final Cut Pro X to 10.4.1, Motion to 5.4.1 and Compressor to 4.4.1 will be available as free upgrades on Monday April 9th 2018.

Two big new features for FCPX are Closed Captions and the ability to use the new ProRes RAW codecs.

Apple also announced that 2017 was FCPX's best year with over 500,000 new seats being sold, bringing the total tally of seats sold to over 2.5 million since launch.

Final Cut Pro X Version 10.4.1 will be the second major update in four months, ending the speculation why a bug fix wasn't on its way! This free update (The 26th since launch) adds two new features, Closed Caption Support and the ability to use the new ProRes RAW Codecs.

Closed Captions

Working as a new Role, Closed Captions can now be added, edited and exported from within FCPX. Importing an existing caption file will automatically connect the captions to a timeline at the correct places or captions can be built from scratch.

The captions connect to the Primary Storyline or audio clips so that they will move if items on the timeline are reordered. The captions can be exported via the new enhanced sharing pane as industry-standard CEA-608 (US TV) and iTT formats (iTunes), with the option to embed captions in the video file or create a separate sidecar file.

The new Role tab in the sharing pane displays all the titles, video and audio Roles from a Project. Enabled and disabled states of the Project are reflected in the panel and changes can be made by toggling on/off the roles.

Captioned videos can be shared directly to YouTube and Vimeo.

The Compressor update fully supports Closed Captions including the ability to create captions, view, adjust and deliver them.  

ProRes RAW

Apple has announced two new codecs, ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ. These are designed to allow the FCPX user to have all the benefits of working with untouched raw image data from the camera sensor, but without the overhead of large files sizes and long render times.

You can play up to 8 streams of ProRes RAW or 7 streams of ProRes RAW HQ on an iMac Pro. When editing in Final Cut Pro, ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ render faster and export more quickly than comparable versions of REDCODE RAW and Canon Cinema RAW Light.

Some other speed comparisons, ProRes RAW HQ will render nearly 6x faster than REDCODE RAW 3:1 and ProRes RAW HQ will encode to H.264 nearly 6x faster than REDCODE RAW 3:1. The bandwidth of the new codecs is between ProRes 4444 and 422.

Which all sounds ideal if you need to make proxies or dailies of the RAW footage. 

The update to Motion allows the app to support both codecs. (Obviously no closed caption support!)

Apple has also announced two ProRes RAW partners, Atomos and DJI. Which now makes sense of why Atomos are attending the FCPX events planned for NAB next week.

Atomos will announce that their Sumo 19 and Shogun Inferno recorders will support ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ with a firmware update.

DJI will announce that their Zenmuse X7 camera and Inspire 2 drone will support ProRes RAW and ProRes HQ.


Don't forget, these updates will come available on the Mac App Store on Monday the 9th.

Current Editing

great house giveaway 2020

2020 has been busy, the beginning of the year was finishing off a new property series (cut on FCP) for Channel 4 called The Great House Giveaway. I also designed and built the majority of the graphics as Motion templates. It has been a great success and the shows grabbed more viewers in the 4pm weekday slot than any previous strand. It has been recommissioned by C4 for 60 episodes, including prime-time versions and five themed programmes. The shows have also been nominated for a 2021 BAFTA.

Tour de france 2020
Although both were postponed to later in the year, I worked again on ITV's coverage of the Tour de France and La Vuelta. 2020 was my 25th year of editing the TdF and my 20th year as lead editor. The Tour was the first broadcast show to adopt FCPX working for multiple editors on shared storage.

BBC's Snooker has played a big part in my life, I've been editing tournament coverage since 1997. I'm proud to be part of a very creative team that has pioneered many new ideas and workflows that are now industry standard in sports' production. This is currently an Adobe Premiere edit.

Covid cancelled some of the regular corporate events that I edit such as trade shows & events. I was lucky however to edit, from home, on projects for Amazon Kindle, Amazon Black Friday, Mastercard and very proud to have helped local charitable trust Kendall & Wall secure lottery funding.

As for software, my weapon of choice is Final Cut Pro and Motion, but I also have a good knowledge and broadcast credits with Adobe Premiere Pro, MOGRT design and Photoshop.

Plugin Design & Development

I'm the creative force behind Idustrial Revolution, one of the oldest Final Cut Pro plugin developers. It hosts a range of commercial and free plugins on the site. One free plugin was downloaded over a thousand times within 24 hours of release.

I also take on custom work, whether it is adapting an existing plugin for a special use or designing new plugins for clients from scratch. Having a good knowledge of editing allows me to build-in flexibility and more importantly, usability.


Now in its 10th year and 4th redesign, running FCP.co has given me knowledge on how to run a large CMS- you are currently reading my bio from the database! Although it sounds corny, I am pretty well up on social media trends & techniques, especially in the video sector. The recent Covid restrictions has enabled live FCP.co shows online. This involves managing a Zoom Webinar through Restream.io to YouTube and Facebook.
