Well, it has been a slow January for news (that we can publish) so we thought we would post this video that we came across on our YouTube explorations. Don't shout at the screen!
It has been a busy week for codec news. We try to sift through the information, dispel the FUD and come out the other side in one piece.
Yes, this is a site about Final Cut Pro, but we love new things, especially when they are inspired by Final Cut Pro X itself. So let's fire up the new Adobe Rush and give it go.
It's quite simple. Stop what you are doing, make a large coffee and watch these two videos. Never before has Randy Ubillos, the creator of the original Final Cut Pro and FCPX, gone into so much detail about the history of NLE software development. We publish the two part recording of Randy's chat with Michael Horton at the recent LACPUG 18th birthday anniversary meeting.
Has the tide turned? It seems more and more are discovering that FCPX is really the fastest and best way to get content ingested, edited and outputted. YouTuber Levi Allen AKA Leftcoast gave himself 24 hours to make the switch. Why did he change NLEs? His video tells all.
Want to know more about the state of each of the NLEs in the industry? This forty minute panel discussion with some of the top industry commentators is well worth a watch.
Not just being able to operate another NLE, but be good at it, able to sit next to a paying client working under time pressure. Is theres a lot of common ground? On the 25th anniversary of Adobe's Premiere launch, are NLE’s all becoming the same or are they getting more specialised?
Continuing our look at Final Cut Pro X for Premiere editors, Chris Roberts takes a look at the different editing techniques you can employ. There are some big changes and Chris gives you the information you need to know to get up to speed.
Here at FCP.co, we are all too familiar with the advantages of a Final Cut Pro X workflow. But, as FCP X becomes more widely used throughout the production industry, we thought we’d dedicate a little space to helping those familiar with other NLEs get to grips with our favourite editing platform. We asked Chris Roberts (who’s both an Apple Certified Trainer and Adobe Certified Instructor) to help Premiere Pro editors draw parallels with FCP X.
Rick Young caught up with Walter Murch right after the SuperMeet in Amsterdam. He starts off with a question about Final Cut Pro X...
Wes Plate from Automatic Duck presented his new product Ximport AE at the recent Los Angeles Creative Pro User Group. Wes showed the audience how to get FCPX timelines into After Effects and also recounts some great NLE history. Well worth a watch with your morning latte for half an hour!
Final Cut Pro X's speed and thus the benefits are gradually becoming recognised by editors in the industry. So on a new Retina MacBook Pro, how does Adobe's Premiere Pro match up to FCPX's performance, especially with 4K? Badly as Max Yuryev found out in his video. We are looking forward to the comments about this one!
Yes, we are a site about Final Cut Pro, but it doesn't do any harm to look at other NLEs out there. Especially when an update comes out with new features.
Google can be a very clever tool, especially when it comes to comparing statistics. We wanted to find out which non linear editor got the most web and YouTube searches.
The new Nodes 2 plugin from Yanobox was announced at the Supermeet in Las Vegas last night. Create complex visual animations in Final Cut Pro X, FCP7, Motion, Adobe After Effects & Premiere Pro.

Unlimited Filters from Picture Instruments allows a user to build looks in Photoshop and then take the LUT grades and apply them in FCPX, Adobe's Premiere Pro and After Effects.
After a great tease video, the news is out. Universe from Red Giant is a new system for building plugins for multiple hosts on OSX and Windows machines. It's community driven and a variety of subscription plans gets you access to a growing library of effects.
When we saw this PBS survery over the weekend, we were very pleased to see how Final Cut Pro dominated the post production section. We were even happier when we saw that we could embed it here on FCP.co.
Bad news all round. It looks like Adobe have been the victim of a rather nasty attack. Time to change your Adobe password PDQ.
Possibly a rhetorical question, but it is good to see Final Cut Pro X taking the stage again at the SuperMeet. Don't forget we still have an offer of five Euros off the admission price.
It's the night before NAB which gives us the perfect reason to show these videos from the recent Editor's Lounge Pre-NAB Discussion Panel. Lots of speculation across the board and NLE manufacturers, comments include 'Avid is 'stodgy' and 'FCPX will win the race.' Interesting.
And you thought your first $4.99 spend of today would be a sandwich at lunchtime! Possibly not as everybody in the FCP.co office this morning has been busy downloading the new Photoshop Touch app onto their phones. It's going to be popular.

We think we'll look back and see the introduction of Thunderbolt as a bit of a watershed. Today AJA Video Systems announced the io XT, a portable I/O video 7 audio capture box. We sat down with Tony Cacciarelli who took us through all the new products and updates for IBC 2011.
We first saw this a few days ago and to be honest were slightly put off by the sparse website. There is nothing like a fresh demo to prove a point and here the author shows off the script exporting RED material out of Final Cut Pro X and into After Effects.
You may ask "What has Inkling got to do with Final Cut Pro?" Well not a lot, but it is so cool we thought we would have to mention this new product from Wacom.

A breath of fresh air after so much negativity over the last few days about a certain new piece of software. We had so many people viewing the last Photoshop tutorial by Sean Armenta from FStoppers, we thought we'd post this follow up.
***Updated with winners***
You are probably familiar with Digital Rebellion's other products such as the excellent FCS Maintenance Pack and Cut Notes for the iPad. Their latest product is Editmote, a remote controller for FCP, Avid, Premiere or the QuickTime player for Mac. They've also given us two copies to give away.
So you can work the kit, but can you work with clients? Having many years of facility editing under our belts, we would say they are both just as important. Many editors can do the former, not everyone can do the latter.
A nice update. Adobe even admit to borrowing a few features from other NLE's. Get a tour of the new features of Premiere and the other apps with a 43 minute demo video after the break.
OK, maybe the title is a bit over the top but if you've ever had to do cutouts for motion graphics you will love this refined extraction process in Photoshop CS5.
We thought this was interesting as it parallels Final Cut Pro's transition from the 32 bit Carbon API into the 64 bit world of Cocoa. Now why can't the Apple team make a video like this?
