In my opinion, the only benefit of capturing directly from the NLE (instead of using BMD or AJA standalone app) is that you would be able to add markers on the fly during ingest, which none of these apps allow at present. I believe it would be a nice addition to either Blackmagic Media Express or AJA Control Room, as well as FCPXML support (in order to send the logging information to FCP X with the captured clips).

About SOFTRON, I think their M software/hardware bundles are great for complex live productions like the ones you mentioned. But it's also a great solution for smaller productions or events, since their software is compatible with BMD and AJA cards too. So if you already have a couple BMD Ultrastudio Mini Recorders, you'd only need to buy 2 licenses of [url=http://http://www.softron.tv/products/movierecorder]Movie Recorder[/url] (995€ each) to be able to capture two streams simultaneously, and edit them on the same computer as growing files inside FCP X in multicam mode. Perhaps it's a bit pricey for a single gig, but if you do this quite often I think it's totally worth the investment.

Sorry you are having issues. But as far as I know, FCP X always works with the full resolution of the source clip, no matter how or where it is conformed. So I'm thinking this could be a bug perhaps related to the R3D media.

I just did a quick test with a 3K ProRes anamorphic clip.

1. Here is how the clip looks inside a 720p Project, so you can see the full shot

[File Attachment: 3KOriginalto720pProject_FullShot.jpg]

2. This is what I get if I scale up the original shot in the 720p timeline

[File Attachment: 3KOriginalto720pProject_Reframed.jpg]

*NOTE: It doesn't matter which Spatial Conform setting you use. That only affects the way the Scale percentage is displayed but doesn't affect the quality of the scaling because FCP X doesn't downsample the clip, it always works with the source's native resolution.

3. Then, I created a 720p multi clip containing the 3K clip (Spatial Conform set to Fit), edited the multi clip into a 720p Project, and finally did a similar upscale... My results were almost identical as you can see.

[File Attachment: 3KClipin720pMulticlipto720pProject_Reframed.jpg]

So I don't know what's really going on here, but in my experience, FCP X allows you to mix resolutions inside a Multicam clip and still will give you "access" to the full resolution of each source clip within the Project (no matter which resolution the Multicam clip has).

what specific reason do you have for not using FCPX?

I'm afraid you can't work at 48 FPS in Final Cut Pro X either. There isn't a preset for it and unfortunately we can't choose a custom frame rate at the moment (only spatial resolution is customizable)

You could work in a 24 FPS timeline and conform the 48 FPS original footage to 24 FPS using "Automatic Speed" for nice slow motion. For an FCP7 workflow, you would have to use Cinema Tools to conform your footage before ingest.

But if that's not what you want and you need to deliver a 48 FPS master, you don't have many options... I know the latest version of Avid Media Composer supports it. But Premiere Pro CC and FCP 7-X don't have support for this at the moment.

Good luck!

1) Command clicking doesn't feel odd to me: it's the same shortcut that you use in the Finder to select multiple items, and also everywhere in FCP X (Browser, Timeline, etc.) In the timeline, selecting several storylines at once works exactly as selecting several clips at once. Pretty straight forward, in my opinion.

2) Yes, it is possible to Finalize several auditions at once... but this one is a bit trickier and definitely not intuitive. Here's how you do it:

  • Open one Audition in the timeline (Y)
  • While the Audition is open, select all the other auditions by Command clicking
  • In the menu bar, go to "Clip > Audition > Finalize Audition" or press ⌥⇧Y

In my opinion, we shouldn't have to Open an Audition to be able to do this. Please, send an Enhancement request to Apple if you agree: www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html

One more thing...

If you are working with a single event (or you know in which event you have to search), I recommend you to store your keywords within a Folder. This will allow you to select the main Folder and view keyword ranges in the Browser like you want to. As simple as that. A great tip from Patrick Southern! ;)

The Smart Collection trick is great if you have multiple keyworded events and want to make searches across all of them. In that scenario, you would have to create a Library Smart Collection with all the KW active, and select it before making any text search.

Hello again, Joshua.

Here's a "workaround" that might work for you, in case Apple takes too long to add this feature (or decides is not a good idea).

Let me explain it step by step with an example:

1. Here is an event with 2 clips and a few keyword ranges. Notice that the event is selected on the Libraries panel.

2. If I type the word "off" in the Browser's search field, one of the clips will be filtered out and I will be left with just one clip. But I still see the whole clip, not just the Keyword range I'm interested in. That's obviously not what I want. So here's what you need to do.

3. Create a Smart Collection, filter by "Keywords" and make sure you "Check All" your keywords at once. Now you are isolating just the keyword ranges instead of displaying the whole clips.

4. Now, in order to do a text search, you would think you just have to add a "Text" filter in the Smart Collection and start typing... But strangely, this doesn't work as supposed to: FCPX will show the two ranges of the same clip, even though one of them doesn't match with the search criteria! To me, this looks clearly like a bug. But don't worry, here is how you fix it.

5. Delete the "Text" filter from the Smart Collection, and instead, type the text in the Browser's search field. Voila! You are effectively searching keyword ranges by text without having to select the Keyword Collection they belong to in the Libraries panel. :)

Let me know if this helps. Best,

Jesús

Hello, Joshua. Welcome to the forum!

I understand the issue you are having with the search functionality in FCP X.

If you want to see keyword ranges as individual items in the browser (instead of seeing them within the whole clip), you just need to click on the pertinent keyword collection in the Libraries panel. That's just the way FCP X works at the moment.

I understand that this is not ideal when searching... since quite often we don't know to which Keyword a particular Note is associated to.

With Favorite ranges, we can just filter the Browser to display "Favorites" (Ctrl F) and search by ranges. But unfortunately we don't have a filter that forces the Browser to display Keyword ranges (there is just an option to show clips with "No Ratings or Keywords", which isn't helpful in this case).

[File Attachment: viewing-favorites-final-cut-pro.jpg]

I think having an additional filter in the Browser called "Keywords" (Ctrl K is not currently in use and seems like a great shortcut to me) it would be a great addition to the app. If you agree, send feedback to Apple about this. I definitely will!

Cheers,

Jesús

Hi Ricky,

You probably know this trick already (since you posted this topic a long time ago), but I was recently trying to find a way to use FCP X built-in transitions with Titles without affecting lower layers and forum member Jari Innanen pointed me to a video by Benjamin Halsall with a very useful trick to avoid using Compound Clips:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuKnrRohlN8&feat...A6rLc3CatSLhHkarDYIG

It doesn't work with every FCP X transition (just like Compound Clips don't work with all of them), but it can be a good workaround for many transitions.

I hope you find it useful as well. Cheers,

Great info, Greg!!

I'm working on an article for my company's blog (cutpeople.tumblr.com) comparing the cost of licensing 5 FCPX suites for 6 years versus the cost of licensing 5 Adobe/Avid suites for the same period...

I think I should add your comparison as well, if you are OK with it, Greg. Of course, I would give you credit for it in the article.

Thanks for taking the time to make this and share it with us!

Hi Boris,

Do you have the Canon XF Plugin for Final Cut Pro X installed in your system?
www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/hom...eos-c300?tab=drivers

I don't have it installed at I could import the test files I linked to previously without a problem.

Maybe you are running into some kind of conflict with the plugin. Have you tried uninstalling that instead?

Good luck!

Thanks to Robbie Coblentz (Twitter: @RCoblentz), I finally learnt what flavors of the XF-AVC format are not supported in Final Cut Pro X yet.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVGTTrhN8js

In this screencast he took the time to make, he proves that FCPX 10.2.2:

  • Supports all YCC 4:2:2 10-bit Canon C300 Mk II formats: HD/2K/UHD/4K.
  • Doesn't support any of the RGB 4:4:4 formats (HD/2K) regardless of the bit depth (10/12-bit).

I hope this is useful for someone else in this forum. I will definitely send feedback to Apple about this issue. Hopefully they will support 4:4:4 RGB clips from the Canon C300 MK II in future updates.

In case anyone is interested, I just found online some sample 4K AVC-Intra footage from the Canon C300 Mark II:

REVIEW Link: www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/10/canon-c...ii-first-impressions
DOWNLOAD Link: www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/lNKtyhSU..._=cd_share_link_copy

They are OP1a MXF files that you can import straight into Final Cut Pro X 10.2.2 even with the "Leave Files in Place" option (rewrapping is not necessary).

So it seems that Apple added support to XF-AVC in FCPX 10.2.2 that came with a Pro Video Formats update as well. :)

Anyone still having issues with this format under 10.2.2? Can we confirm that this is fixed for good?

I'm just starting to work in a project that's being shot in the Canon C300 Mark II as well. So if anyone can report a solution to import the footage directly into Final Cut Pro X, I'd really appreciate it. :)

I'm finding confusing information about this online. For instance, I just read on Twitter that you can successfully import XF-AVC media into Final Cut Pro X:

twitter.com/RCoblentz/status/692324831556169728

It seems FCPX needs to rewrap the MXF original files to MOV (so the support is not "truly native" I guess). But at least you can import the files with the "Copy to Library Destination" option checked.

Has anyone had the same experience with XF-AVC Intra frame footage?
