I have just done some more tests and I realise that it's the iMac that isn't reading certain cards. I know this is not an FCPX issue, so I will search for the solution elsewhere.

In the meantime, if anyone knows a way to fix iMacs not reading video files within cards, please let me know. The SD Cards are fine and working.

Hi there, I replaced the card. I also checked both cards on a Macbook Pro and both are working fine.

FCPX on my MacPro 2017 isn't reading certain cards. Both Macs are running latest FCPX and Catalina OS update.

It's so weird!

Hi Guys,

I've been using FCPX for 5 years and never come across an issue that i cannot solve - this simple issue is killing me.

I am trying to import some video files from my SD Card onto Final Cut on my 2017 iMac, running Mojave 10.14.6. I am using identical SD cards. The iMac recognises the videos on one card and cannot pick them up on the other.

My and a friend's Macbook Pros read both SD cards. No problem. But the iMac only reads one. I have tried replacing the SD card, formatting the card. Changing the video from NTCS to PAL, deleting preferences. Uninstalling and reinstalling FCPX.

Nothing has solved it. The iMac likes one card and doesn't recognise another.

Are there any geniuses on here that can resolve this issue?

Thank you in advance!

Can someone please remind me of the command that makes FCPX automatically skip to the next clip when you are watching them in the Viewer? At the moment the playhead just stops at the end of the clip and I have to manually click on the next clip to watch. Thank you !

Sorry for the inane question x

Phil created a new topic ' Why Can't I Transcode A Proxy File' in the forum. 1 year ago

I am opening a 6 month old project and it is showing several files are missing. When I switch from optimized to "Proxy" timeline, they reappear - I want to export in high quality. I would usually select these files, "Transcode" and select "optimized" - but this option is greyed out.

So my only option is to export a proxy Timeline - not what I want.

Can anyone suggest anything I am missing here?

MOV and MP4 are containers and say nothing about the codec inside of them. That said, I still think it would be better to create a master file of each clip and store those outside of FCPX..
What would be the best way to do this:

At the moment, the files are inside an FCPX library so presumably I "show package contents." and take all the original media into a folder. How does one then create a master file of each clip?

What is the file format/codec of your video files? If they are unedited files you just imported, you can export them individually to a ProRes master file. This increases the likelihood that the MacOS and FCPX can recognize them in future updates, but in 4 years from now there is no guarantee that any current file format will still be valid. As for storing them, I would suggest making a few copies of each and placing them on separate high quality hard drives, and maybe in the cloud also.
they are mainly .mov and .mp4 files

I guess my question is, do you think I need to save the mov and mp4 files outside FCPX or is it OK to just save the library with all the files inside it, and then back that up.

Thank you

I have some very important video files that I am not going to be editing for about 3-4 years. At the moment they are imported into a library in FCPX. I recently opened the library and it told me I had to update it for use within FCPX. I did that and the files came back fine. But it got me thinking:

What is the best way to store these files? I am concerned that FCPX will update and make them redundant? I really can't afford to lose these video files.

Is there a best way / place to store old video files so they are useable in the future without issue?

Thank you,
Phil

I just deleted my preferences and the issue was resolved. Thanks to everyone who patiently helped me with this issue.

I've yet to come onto this Forum with an issue I can't resolve. It's FCP Magic.

Thanks again

This isn't what I am seeing.

As you can see. I have a library that is "In Library" then the next one I start is "Final Cut Libraries"

I think the issue here is that the OP has created a location called "Final Cut Libraries" which resides somewhere on his system. FCPX only offers "In Library" or "Choose", in which the latter allows you to point to or create a destination for the media. As Tom has suggested, choosing "In Library" will place all imported media in the "Original Media" folder of the event that it was imported into within the library that you create.
So am i the only person that is getting the option to store imported media into "Final Cut Libraries"?

Set the library location to In Library in the library properties. This will be used for the next library you create.
This is not what I am seeing in practice. I open a new library and the storage location settings is set to "Final Cut Libraries" automatically. So I switch it to "In library" do a project. Start a new library and it's back to "Final Cut Libraries."

Can you recommend a fix?

Really sorry guys, but I'm still not getting this. Sorry if I haven't understood someone's advice correctly guys... Appreciate your patience.

If I start a library and REMEMBER to select a library, storage locations, "modify settings" and select "in library" - then the media gets put INSIDE the library. If I leave is on "Final Cut Libraries" it saves to folders outside the library (and ruins my life). When you select "in library" and select OK, it removes the option to switch to "Final Cut Libraries" - It just let's you select "in library" or "choose."

The above is cool... I get it... and I understand it.

The issue I have is that I now start a new library... the default is "Final Cut Libraries" - even if all my other libraries are "In Library." So every time I start a video, I am risking putting my files outside my library. I don't want this. It's pissing me off. I just want everything in the library.

Is it possible to tell FCPX to always choose to store imported media INSIDE the library?

Thank you !

Another issue that I see is that in the Import Preferences, you can select to import footage into the library, but because library settings defaults to saving footage outside of the library, again I am getting confused and stumped by the software... I've never had this issue before... only in the last year or so.

I searched on the forum, but didn't find anything relevant. Can anyone provide me with the link to a thread I could read?

Thank you !

I do select "Copy to Final Cut Libaries" in the Import Preferences, but the issue I'm facing is that the library defaults to storing imported media into the files outside the library... So if I don't remember to adjust the setting at the start of every project, I end up with files outside the library.

I then get confused as to how I can move that library. For example, in the Final Cut Optimized Folder it stores imported media from outside the library from MULTIPLE PROJECTS. I am therefore unable to move that folder off my drive unless I move both libraries that it is feeding.

Hi Guys,

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me solve this FCPX issue.

When I create a Library, and look at the library in the inspector, near the top is "Storage Locations" - If you click "Modify settings" you can choose to store footage in "Final Cut Libraries" or "In Library" - it defaults to "Final Cut Libraries" - This means when I import footage, it is taken to 2 separate folders "Final Cut Original Media" and "Final Cut Optimized Media." I find this problematic as I can no longer just move the library from one drive to another.

The solution is to "modify settings" and choose "in Library" - where all footage is then stored inside the library, making it easier to transport.

So I have a few questions based on the above:

1) Is there any way to set this to default in "In Library" so all imported media gets put inside the library. At the moment, I am having to remember to do it and every time I forget, my folder structure grows into something I don't understand.

2) If you have a project that was begun with the storage locations set to "Final Cut Libraries" - how would you then move that library from one drive to another? How could you be sure you're taking all the associated assets with you?

Thanks to one and all!!

Phil created a new topic ' Storing Files INSIDE the library (not in separate Folders)' in the forum. 2 years ago

Hi Guys,

I asked this question about 2 months ago, and I thought I solved it, but I didn't and I know it's going to cause me a catastrophic problem somewhere down the line.

So... When I import media, I always choose "Copy To Final Cut Library" - Because I want my libraries to be portable and I can just pick 'em up and move 'em around. Consolidated?

When I select media in the media browser and click "Reveal in Finder" it takes me to a separate folder OUTSIDE of the library called "Final Cut Original Media" - The program is storing all my media in chronological folders in there. But this is OUTSIDE THE LIBRARY !!!!

[File Attachment: ScreenShot2018-12-13at1.05.58AM.png]

[File Attachment: ScreenShot2018-12-13at1.06.38AM.png]

I know the source of the problem. When you select the Library and then click "Modify" in the inspector, it gives you 2 options. You can store clips "In Final Cut Libraries" or "In Library" - In Final Cut Libraries is the devil. It keeps reverting to that. And then half way through a project I find that it's stored all my media outside the library. "In Library" is the one I need - but it keeps reverting back to the the other option. As I said, soon enough this will be a big issue for me as I'll move a library and leave a load of files outside it.

I have 2 questions:

1) Is there a way to get all the media stored in the folder outside the library and have the software move those files back INSIDE the Library.

2) Is there a way to set FCPX up so that it always defaults to "In Library" whenever I make a project without me having to check every time I begin a project.

Thanks all.
