Hans Douma replied to the topic 'Removing unused keywords ?' in the forum. 1 year ago

Yes, well, with me it isn't. Unless somewhere in the dark catacombs of FCPX there still is a keyword hidden that does not show up in any event or collection,
Will just have to live with it, I assume

Thanks for answering

Thank you for your reaction.

Unfortunately that seems not to be the way it works. Some keywords are not used at all, nor in clips nor in any collection but they still exist when selecting keywords for a collection.

Hi all,

using keywords in FCPX is a great way to organise and search for clips. However, it is quite easy to add keywords accidentally by mistyping them. It seems these mis-typed keywords stay in FCPX for ever, because they keep showing up when creating a smart collection existing of a selection of keywords. Even if there is not a single clip left with the wrong keyword, it is still selectable when creating an smart collection.

Is there a way to get rid of these obsolete keywords ?

I'm still on 10.4, so e.g. I miss the Comparison Viewer and the Color Correction is not keyable. So I need to apply two 3rd party effects to achieve what I want.
Desperately need to upgrade to Mojave so i can use the latest FCPX release

It would be easier if both exposure- and color change would occur at the same frame in the clip. That, of course, is not the situation. Both need their own keyframe sequence. Even for a 2 minute clip with frequently changing conditions that's a lot of work. Admitted, on a world scale of terrible things happening, calling this a "complete disaster" may be a little over the top, but I hope you get my drift...

Hi all,

Just received a clip which is showing changing exposures and colors (white balance) throughout the whole clip. Changes in these conditions occur ever so many seconds and key framing exposure and/or white balance would be a complete disaster.

I tried using Analyse and Fix combined with Balance Color, but that doesn't do much

Is there a way (effect/plugin) to do this automatically, e.g. based on one frame in the clip ?

Thanks very much.

I think I entered this editor by accidentally pressing the space bas ever so lightly and trimming a clip at the same time.
Anyway, it's solved now. Pfff

Hi all,

Is there anybody who can help me out ? I was in the middle of editing an FCPX project when suddenly (probably by accidentally hitting a certain key) the time line view went crazy. I have absolutely no clue how to get it back to the "normal" view. I added a screenshot of what it looks like

Any help is appreciated since it is a time critical project

Hans Douma created a new topic ' Background tasks running but none defined' in the forum. 2 years ago

Hi all,

Sometimes when I quit FCPX I get a message saying background tasks are cancelling. What background tasks ?? The background task window is not showing any running. I have background rendering switched off. So what else could be running and, most important, how do I prevent them from running in the first place. FCPX is very sluggish so maybe these invisible BG-tasks are causing that. I am running FCPX 10.4 on Sierra on an iMac late 2012 32GB RAM

Any ideas are welcome

Hans Douma created a new topic ' Move title causing serious performance problems' in the forum. 2 years ago

In one of my video editing projects I experienced increasing performance problems in FCPX, like stuttering playback, taking ages for characters to appear when editing text, response times of 5 secs or more between mouse clicks, etc. to a level it became unacceptable.
Because earlier projects never gave such serious problems, I tried to figure out what was different in this project and eventually all pointed in the direction of the "move" title, I had never used before but used it extensively in this project. So i decided to replace them buy ordinary "Basic Thirds" and along the way performance got better and better. After replacing them all, it is all nice and responsive again.
So: don't use the Move title

Hans Douma created a new topic ' Automatic horizontal leveller' in the forum. 2 years ago

Hi all,

Levelling hand shot footage horizontally can be a time consuming task, especially if the levelling changes during the shot.
is any of you familiar with an FCPX plugin effect that will automatically level footage throughout the clip, based on e.g. an assigned horizon ?

Hans Douma replied to the topic 'Masking complex objects' in the forum. 2 years ago

The reason I mentioned color corrections is, that it is possible there to add multiple corrections, each having its own color mask. In e.g. a Blur effect (used to simulate DoF) I can only add a single color mask (and multiple shape masks). Adding multiple instances of the Blur effect does not work. So, if only masks in effects could also consist of multiple color masks that could be inverted individually, it would make life a lot easier.
Would be nice if FCPX 10.5 would help here

I would like to get back on the multiple color masks issue. I know I can add multiple color corrections each having their own color mask. In my case, though, I would like to apply multiple color masks to the same effect, like the Blur effect. I can add multiple shape masks, but only a single color mask, unless I missed something completely...

A DoF effect could be easier applied, if I could just add the Blur effect and mask it with multiple color masks. E.g. one for the hair, one for the skin, etc. That way I wouldn't need to keyframe anything.

Is there a way to achieve that ?

Yes, I tried multiple masks as well. Although it is easier than one big mask, I found myself asking why I was doing it, because the result is bad anyway. Especially the hair outline will never work

Thank you all for your thoughts about this

Thanks Karsten. Yes, ideally you plan a shot like that, but unfortunately that is not alway possible. Adding the effect in post, as you say, proved to be impossible.

Hans Douma created a new topic ' Masking complex objects' in the forum. 2 years ago

Hi all,

over the last couple of days I have been trying all sorts of ways to get a working method to mask (and track) complex objects, such as people or just heads. One of the things I would like to do is creating a depth-of-field effect around the heads. I know there are plug-ins available that might do an acceptable job, but they come at a price...
So I applied the Gaussian blur to a clip and then tried to mask out areas that should not be affected. The first attempt was to draw a mask, but had to abandon that idea because of e=the enormous amount of work to track the mask throughout the clip. So I tried to combine color masks and shape masks, but ran into a number of limitations in FCPX (unless I am completely wrong, which I hope I am...)
First, it does not seem to be possible to combine multiple color masks in the same effect. It is only possible to use a single color mask and add multiple shape masks. That brings me to the second limitation: I can invert the masks, but only all at the same time. I have not found a way to invert individual masks.

What am I missing ?

Hans Douma replied to the topic 'Audio gone on synced clips' in the forum. 2 years ago

Well, finally found how to enable the audio. Selecting the synced clip (not opening it) and click the check box in the audio configuration several times. When selecting the clip., the audio is showing as enabled (but it isn't) then unchecking it and re-checking it will finally enable the audio.

Hans Douma replied to the topic 'Audio gone on synced clips' in the forum. 2 years ago

I have a continuous video + sound and several separate video shots. I want to create one single video from that and use the audio from the continuous video as the basis. To position the other shots correctly audio sync is an ideal option.

I do not see an option in the audio configuration to switch the audio on or of. Editing the synced clip is showing and playing the audio fine. It is only when I want to move it into the time line, that the audio is disabled. Found no way to get it back other than recreate the synced clip, now without the option to disable the audio components

Sorry Tom, you are incorrect. It works fine, but the "disable audio components" option is killing/ It leaves the resulting video without audio and I don't see a way of getting it back, except redoing the syncing.....
