Thank you so much for your comprehensive and thoughtful reply. I’ve been encoding to H.264 but you have given me many options to pursue. I make much of my living — more since the pandemic — from post production, so being able to resolve technical issues within the FCPX community is extremely valuable and highly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Tom

I realize there are so many variable to enumerate, but I've noted that sometimes when I send a project for encoding and uploading via Share, the project get's stuck in the encoding cycle for a very long time. In my impatience, I will abort the encode, send the project to Compressor to create a full-sized ProRes 1080P master, then encode that master to a large H264 that I will in tern upload to Vimeo. This second approach has more steps but encounters no bottlenecks. Anyone else have this experience with Share? Any suggestions for a fix? Share is convenient when it works (which is most of the time.)

First, a question from a new eGPU user: after hooking up a Blackmagic EGPU to my 2019 15” Macbook Pro, I have discovered that in the info box for “about FCPX, there is no “prefer eGPU’ option to check. On other applications on this laptop, such as Capture One Pro, the option is available. Likewise, Affinity Phot, After Effects, etc. Should it matter?

When running FCPX with the eGPU connected, it’s obvious the card is working. Playback of a busy 4K project in “Better Quality” is stunningly smooth. I’ve got more work to do before I realize more of what this eGPU can do. Regardless, it’s a welcome device. The way images in Capture One — an app that is GPU-reliant — redraw so much faster, is a welcome change. I have not run any tests using all the usual software. I know that’s good science, but it’s not my thing.

My point? I’m not sure, but I just wanted to share the joy of discovery. Be well, my fellow FCPX users.

It never occurred to ma that one couldn't insert a gap clip in a secondary storyline, but I'll be darned if I don't know how to do it. Anyone?

Thanks,

My main day-to-day apps: FCPX, After Effects, Capture One, Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer. Been chugging along with the fully loaded 2016 (maximum RAM, processor, 2TB drive, etc) Where I'm starting to notice performance issues is actually on the photography side when retouching raw images taken with a medium format camera (Fuji FGX 50s). Any users of a fully loaded 2019 15" (32GB, fastest processor, etc.) that notice a significant performance boost?

I share the experience of Stasinos: any kind of video will not roll, it’s not just FCPX. Even if I click on a You Tube , Vimeo or a Quicktime movie: it ain’t gonna roll until after I shut down and restart. I’m intrigued by the suggestion that I disconnect my external audio card, which in my case is a Duet 2.

I had wondered if this was happening to anyone else. So if I’m crazy, it’s gotta be another reason.

Thanks,

Tom

Dear Andreas,

I just now was using your beta XTM, Following your notes, it works perfectly on my projects. I've only hit one stump: my client want the text, but without the black backgrounds.

I see no way to manipulate the subtitle clips created by your app to eliminate the black background. Frankly, I'd like to keep it, as it makes the subtitles more readable.

Unless you have a solution, I think my only low-tech alternative is to use the FCPX title tools and edit like mad.

Please accept my thanks to you all for your expert and timely responses. I now have the means to cross my finish line on time. For a while, I thought that yesterday's update of FCPX would address my issue. However, what my client wants is text that can be formatted, so burn-in CC won't suffice.

I'm on it; and again, this forum is the best.

Thanks,

Tom
