Hi Rick, look at the bottom right of your browser list window (the one with the group and the missing filters). There are three icons: a checkerboard, a gear, and a stapled frame. Make sure that you have enabled the latter, maybe you did accidentally inactivate it.

What Overturf says. Alternatively, you could alt-drag twice to make two copies of the clip, brighten one of them and darken the other, and then keyframe their opacities to your liking.

Just out of curiosity: How long did it take to copy the 1,4 TB to your library? Are you definitely sure that FCPX had finished the import before you removed the card?

Using the primary storyline as a container for audio scratch clips appears to to be a waste of useful space to me. Why don't you create a 1-frame gap clip at the beginning of the primary and connect your audio clips to that? Then you'd have the primary storyline free for editing around.

Hi, I am not sure why you would need a plugin for this. Why not use the transformation tools of FCPX? Or, for more sophisticated options, go into Motion and build your own effect.

Fedor von Hengstenberg replied to the topic 'How to best work with an image stack' in the forum. 4 years ago

Well, I find it quite easy to import an image sequence into FCPX. Import the entire folder with the images, then select all and append to storyline (E), select all, ctrl-D, type 1 for the duration, ready. You might want to collect the image sequence into a compound clip, but that's optional.

I use Synkron for this kind of work: synkron.sourceforge.net/
Quite easy and reliable app – and it's free, I think.

Karsten, I see two solutions for problem, both of which I sometimes employ to solve my tasks here. For both methods it comes in very handy to have a script of the play at hand, with numbered scenes or even numbered lines. Then for the first method, you go through the footage in the browser and favor and keyword scenes or line ranges (sc01 resp. lines 48-72) together with the shooting date or take. You end up with a nice list where you can look up scene 4, e.g., choose the best take, and append it to your timeline. The second approach would be to add the respective clips from the different shooting dates as a stack to the timeline first, then go over them and add markers. Remember that you can name the markers so that you can find them in the timeline index. I should prefer method 1 for your type of project, but it's personal preference, I think. Good luck for the production!

Fedor von Hengstenberg replied to the topic 'Exportation question' in the forum. 5 years ago

When you buy some stock footage clips at, e.g., Pond5, you usually have the option to choose between H264 and ProRes422. A typical short clip of approx. 15 seconds in ProRes422 at FullHD (1920x1080) would have a size of 500 MB max. So I suspect that either your clip is quite too long for a stock footage snippet, or something is wrong with your export options.

One keyframe in the middle would be correct for the effect I think you want to achieve. It is now making a smooth reversion most likely because the keyframes are not set to linear. In order to change this, click the transformation icon (left lower corner of the preview window). Then the keyframes should appear in the preview. Right (ctrl)click one after the other, set their mode to "linear" and you should be fine.

Well, I have only a few wishes regarding an update. The reason is that I am quite happy with the software after editing more than 1000 corporate, music, and art videos with FCPX. Nevertheless, here are my points:

1) Colored roles

2) Primary storyline clip glueing (keeping clips together without generating compounds clips)

3) Repairing bugs. Example: You have a text (word) in black over a white generator. When you click and alt/drag both items as a copy to another location, they will display in reverse order, i.e., the text under the generator. I do not see why it needs to do this.

4) As for the Motion roundtrip, I have to admit that I am quite comfortable with the situation as is. Let me explain this minority opinion. Usually, I make an animation in Motion, export a ProRes 4444 file, import it into FCPX and I'm done. Want to change something? Then I just open the Motion project, make the change, and export a new ProRes 4444 file with the same name replacing the previous file. It will instantly be updated in FCPX. This is just two clicks more than with roundtripping, and the advantage: I am dealing with simple assets, and I do not require a second piece of software to function on my machine. Remember what happened to the Motion projects when converting legacy projects to FCPX via 7toX? They arrived black.

5) I would like to see (or better: hear) enhanced audio processing, especially bus-organized routing by roles. Yes, I could do this by going via LPX, but it would just be comfortable to stay in FCPX for this.

These are my major points. Happy editing!

Fedor von Hengstenberg replied to the topic '2.39 Aspect Ratio in FCPX' in the forum. 5 years ago

Hm, maybe I fail to see the problem, but since 10.1 you can have custom frame sizes. Choose "New project", and in the frame size window select "custom". You can type in any frame size and frame rate.

Well, I think the app you are looking for is FCPX. It was made for this kind of stuff. If you choose to leave the media where they are, as external media on an external drive, then FCPX won't copy any of your terabytes. It imports the information and you can browse, tag, reject, keyword, and mark favorites to your liking. And then, everything is set up for your edit. So why bother with another app? It's all there. :)

One brief question: Your footage appears to be SD at 720x576 px, which is an aspect ratio of roughly 4:3 (exactly 4:3.2). However, in your first YouTube screenshot, the visible frame of your footage is 640x360 px, that is 16:9. What did you do to your footage to arrive at this aspect ration in the first place?

Hi Grendel,
when you choose a clip in the browser and hit "delete", FCPX will not move the clip to the trash, but mark it as rejected. And there is a drop-down menu at the top of the browser that lets you choose what the browser should show. It tends to default to "hide rejected" which means that once you hit delete and reject a clip or portions of it, it will no longer be shown in the browser. Check your drop-down menu and choose "show all clips". Just my 2 cents.
