Yes, Don, that's what I used to do too. That's a lot of steps though, which is why I made this little generator. You just add it and adjust its length. No fussing with opacity or keyframes.

Yes, Manoucho, it's a generator. Since it goes over the top of everything, it has to be a generator.

I like it too. I did those tedious opacity keyframes on black rectangles so many times in the past. It's so nice to have it done just once, and so easy to use.

I toyed with trying to publish a control to "Hold Current Frame" in case you use it in the middle of a project, and want the black (or other solid color) to last longer without affecting the speed of the fade. I couldn't figure that out though. Oh well. You can always add a Hold to it using the timing tool in FCPX.

I'm glad you like it. It's fun to finally start giving back to the community. I've downloaded several effects from this forum but I never got around to learning Motion myself so I could start making some myself.

Thanks to the user who pointed out that my attachment didn't work because the file size was too big. II had a video clip in there I just used to test the fade, and now my Fade All Layers Transition is lean and mean. Let's see if this attachment works:

[File Attachment: FadeAllLayers.zip]

Anyway, if you didn't see my earlier post, this is a little generator that acts as a fade which will work when you have multiple layers of video and you want them all to fade evenly. There is also a color option so you can fade to white, red, blue, or any other color. Hope you like!

Cool. Glad you like it. This is such a cool feature of Motion/FCPX! It's almost like an open source program with the ease of creating effects and sharing them with others. I want to do more, especially very functional ones like this. Crazy effects like the other one I made (a generator to make a character see stars) is fun in very specific (and rare) situations. But there are others that I can imagine being useful much more often.

I'd like to try a color mask that you can motion track in FCPX, for example, but I don't see where that is possible.

I might also try a smoke transition, where smoke gradually fills the screen until it covers everything else up. Has anyone else ever tried that?

Yeah, I read about adjustment layers, and that is a interesting workaround too. One advantage my generator has is you can change colors of the fade easily. Another is the opacity keyframes are set, so you don't have to do that every time.

Have any of you downloaded my generator from the Google Drive link I posted? Does that work?

Thanks Ben, but I did it before. Check out this post:

I don't understand why it worked then, but not now . . .

Hi folks. I tried to attach a ZIP file of a Motion Generator I made in a post to the forum. I followed all the steps, and I saw the attachment in the preview, but when I posted it, there was no attachment. I wonder if this is because I am a relatively new member here, but the first time I tried the same thing (with a different generator I made) it worked.

Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong? Or are attachments disabled?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

I uploaded the file and attached it several times. It appeared in the preview, but I don't see it in my post. Am I doing something wrong? I know I'm a newbie, but I tried to figure it out. Help?

In the meantime, maybe you can download from my Google Drive:

Hi everyone. Ever have this problem? Sometimes when I'm editing a project with several layers of video (like ads with images, graphics, and text all at the same time) and I want to fade to black, it's not easy. If you add fades to each layer, they never seem to fade at the same time.

I figured out a workaround, by adding a black shape over all other layers, and then keyframing the opacity to make the black shape fade in and cover everything else up. It worked well, but was a bit of a hassle.

So I created a motion project to make it easier. Check it out. Because it's a video layer, it's actually a generator rather than a transition. To use it, unzip the file and put it in your generator folder. When you want to use it, just add it above all the other layers. If you want the fade out to go faster or slower, just grab the edge of the generator clip and make it longer or shorter.

Not only will this let you fade all the layers in your project, but I've included a color picker so you can easily make it fade to white, red, or some other color. Hope you like it! Let me know what you think!

Dan Cross created a new topic ' Seeing Stars effect (generator, actually)' in the forum. 5 years ago

Hi folks. I made my first FCPX effect (a generator actually, but it acts more like an effect). It is a "Seeing Stars" effect that makes a character looked dazed, like after a bump on the head.

Try it out and see how you like it. Put the attached folder in Motion Templates > Generators to use it.

To see a tutorial about how I made this generator, check out this link:

Let me know what you think. I like it. Is there anything you can think of that would make it even more useful? If you enjoy this, please let me know.

Thanks Ronny. Nice to be here.

One of the things I love most about Motion and FCPX is that they make it so easy for users to create and share templates and effects, almost like an open source program. And this forum is the best place I've found for that sharing to happen.

Hey everyone. I'm new here, but I've visited several times over the years. I have been learning to use Motion 5, and I've seen a lot of nice tutorials, but most of them focus on using Motion for graphics and titles. I want to use it to make VISUAL EFFECTS that can be used in video projects. I haven't seen many tutorials like that, so I decided to make an effect of my own (which I think can serve a useful purpose) and explain the process I followed. I hope you like it. Please comment and share!

The effect I made is called "Seeing Stars" which tries to capture the look of someone seeing stars after a bump on the head or whatever. I'll upload the effect (a Generator, actually) to the forum too, so you can try it out.

Hope you all like it. Let me know what you think.
