Is it a good idea swapping out an expensive iMac Pro for a new base model M1 iMac? Luke Miani tries cutting his videos in Final Cut Pro on the new machine.
There have been lots of reviews about the the new M1 powered iMacs, but this caught our eye because it puts the new model up against a fully loaded iMac Pro.
The new M1 iMac is certainly a head turner, but Apple isn't really targeting professional users such as video editors. In today's video I decided to really push the 24 inch iMac to its limits with a real world benchmark, extended video editing on the M1 iMac. Can it actually replace my 10 thousand dollar iMac Pro?
Certainly interesting results and as we await what might come from Apple at WWDC, for us, it reinforces their decision to stop selling the iMac Pro.
A few things we noted about the video:
- When he is playing 60FPS video, it's not playing back at 60FPS - that would have been a harder task for the FCP/iMac combo.
- We have had the missing audio bug in FCP. Our solution is simply to play another clip and go back to the original. That seems to fix it with two clicks and not a longer restart.
Good viewing though, it does make us want to know what is coming next from Apple!
