Hallo unfortunately I have hundreds of wmv and I need to edit them in fcpx.
Could you please suggest me a free software to convert them (if it is possible using a batch) so that I can edit them in fcpx?
And, since I'm interested in buying Compressor, should it be possible to convert them with it?
Thank you very much!
Francesco

unfortunately, wmv is a Microsoft-owned, propritary codec. Only legal way to handle it on MacOS are the plugin products from flip4mac ... the free version is just for playback.

depending on your needs, qualities, flip4mac offers diff. priced versions.

And: Welcome to fcp.co :D

What Karsten said…

Also see the replies to your question on the Apple Compressor and Final Cut boards.

Good luck.

There are actually a few other converters available to convert wmv files. Wondershare converter Ultimate and Pro will do this.

hmm, well, <cough> .... I'm shy recommending those ..... patents, copyrights, results, stuff...

many are just front-ends of the ffmpg-engine, but 'forget' to mention it, resp. ignore the rights of ffmpg.org; and, btmk, flip4mac is the only officially licenced product ... no wonder: flip4mac is owned by Microsoft :D

me no holy man, for some single, private, internal homevideo, okayyy, perhaps ... but for professional purposes? ....

That could be true, but I'm not sure that's entirely correct for the Wondershare product. They are not offering a media player but rather an app that converts wmv's that you have created or own copyright to. They have legal disclaimers about it's use and also some integration with Internet Explorer itself.

Not copyrights on content - copyright on codec!!
(the APIs for IE are 'open'... plus, © and China (Wondershare is, btmk, Chinese) ... loooong story)

wmv is owned by Microsoft... you can not use it 'free' ... the ffmpg project did some reverse engineering...
same with proRes - owned by Apple.
or webM - owned by Google.

I guess, only thing which I own is my trousers... but not 100% sure about that....

Since Flip4Mac operates with the legacy Quicktime as a Component, it can function in Apple Compressor allowing you to convert WMV to any flavor ProRes. I don't think any other convertor is capable of converting to Apple licensed ProRes. They're mostly ffmpeg encoders that convert to x264 .mp4.

Since Quicktime frameworks (and the use of components) is deprecated you may eventually need something like Episode or Squeeze to convert WMV to ProRes.
