It´s been a while since we had a prerelease discussion, so i thought i would start one.
With El Capitan on the horizon and its advancements in AV foundation Audio and metal that FCPX could benefit from and Adobe releasing their update i think this is a good time.
What are your hopes and expectations for the next version of FCPX?
Here is my list:
• role colors for clear visual feedback in the timeline
• horizontal spaces for clips belonging to a certain role in the timeline
• role based audio mixer with the option to keyframe audio on the fly with trackpad or Ipad companion App
• option to add effects to a specific role
• Detailed trimming feedback when trimming with keyboard (2up display)
• better dynamic trimming
• skimmable waveform previews in the sound and music browser
• Remove attributes from selected clips
• Replace at playhead command
• Flatten Multicam Command in timeline to active angle
I´ve got some other smaller enhancements request, but these features i would love to see implemented as soon as possible.
I think 10.2.2 is going to be an interim release so probably nothing major nor directly El Capitan related, unless it's under the hood and unmentioned. Need to fix third party effects problem on secondaries. Probably top of this list. Remove attributes high up there as well, primarily created by the new color correction behavior.
I think this is called an Overwrite Edit, and the shortcut is D. I teach my students to remember D for the Dangerous Destructive Edit. "Interim release" = bug fixes.
BTW, fishing with someone who edits with Avid MC last weekend, and he complained about how hellishly buggy MC is. Hhhmmm... I think that's just the nature of NLEs, there will always be some bug or two.
I sent feedback last week to Apple asking for a few things:
1) Audio to text
Use the power of Siri to analyse and transform a clip audio into text written inside the clip notes or a marker to use it for subtitles or in-app searches for an specific word (like
2) Coloured roles
No further explanation here.
3) Update timeline clips from library
Let us modify a clip content in the library and update that information to all the clips instances already used in the timeline. Example: Open a clip in its own timeline, add a lower third. Update the timeline and that clip has a lower third every time it appears. the same for color correcting or adding a new audio source after the clip has been edited.
4) Primary storyline groups (aka Horizontal clip connections)
An example for this feature would be a secondary storyline inside the primary storyline. Group two or more adjacent clips and with 1 click-n-drag at the border they move together, but each clip can be edited at will inside. Also, as it is in the primary storyline, it'll have vertical connected clips. A compound clip is not a solution because with it I lose the visual representation of each clip inside, also if I have to edit something inside it with a relationship to a music outside of it, it can’t be done because compounds open their own timeline. If I create a compound to “collect” all this clips, then I have to break it apart to modify something, later I’ll have to create a new compound with this new edit and I’ll start creating a lot of useless compounds in my library.
4b) Compound clips expanding in the main timeline
To make it ease to edit something inside a compound clip with a relationship to another audio or video outside that compound clip.
Nope, it's just there. I triple checked before replying to you.
When the clip has a position value that is not 0, when you apply a draw mask, the custom value gets reset to 0. It should maintain the custom value.

No, this is what i meant:
21 Playhead to Playhead FCP7 style Replace edit.
This edit matches the playhead of a clip in the Browser to the playhead of a clip in the Timeline and extends in both directions to either fill a Timeline selection or the length of the Timeline clip.
I'd be happy if it just stopped crashing - major step back with last update.
As mentioned above (and countless times before!) - Remove Attributes option.
Also, increase back the size of the text box: another step back where you barely have 2 lines in the window to look at now. And editing direct in the viewer is not an option when trying to write scrolling text (for end credits for example).
I'm a bit weary of the fact that so many 3rd party plug-ins are threatened every time an upgrade happens.
Guess thats par for the course?
Still I can't complain; its rare that a program evolves so much I guess. I mean I bought my copy of FCPX back when it was released in 2011. Its hardly the same piece of software today. When is Apple going to actually charge us again? I feel guilty; like I'm a welfare leech or something.
Upgrades cause similar 3rd party issues in other NLEs, also. It's not just FCPX. Happens for all applications that have a strong reliance on 3rd party add-ons. RapidWeaver, the really awesome web site building app, has upgrade issues with its very healthy stable of 3rd party plugins having to catch up to the new core coding. That's just life...

+1 for that!!!
I do like that it takes up less space, I think an option to resize it, like you can with text boxes in the OS would be great. What would also be nice is if you could click a button or something to expand the inspector vertically to full screen height. It could just push the timeline over like opening the effects browser does. Though that probably would get odd if you then try to open the effects browser... Nothing is simple. lol
