We don't know why we thought Blackmagic Design would be slightly quieter at IBC this year after a massive NAB that caused their webserver to creak on the opening day. We were wrong, new products for 4K capture and a micro four thirds option on the Cinema Camera just as the original model starts being delivered to customers!

We are a site about FCP, but let us get the the Cinema Camera out of the way first as this announcement will surely light up the internet today.

At 9:00 AM sharp Amsterdam time, the news came through that Blackmagic Design had announced a second version of their Cinema Camera, the MFT. Vitually identical to the original model, the micro four thirds version allows more flexibility with lenses.

“One of the most common customer requests since announcing the original model of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera is other lens mounts,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “We felt that Micro Four Thirds was a fantastic option and so we designed a second model with this mount. Only Micro Four Thirds lets cinematographers use a wide range of creative lenses, but it also easily adapts to other lens mounts such as PL mount, so the range of exciting lens options is virtually unlimited!

The camera is priced the same as the original at $2,995. The original camera will be renamed to Blackmagic Cinema Camera EF to differentiate between the models.

Next up, two products for the capture and playback of 4K.

The new Ultrastudio 4K will retail for $1,295 when it becomes available in November. Designed for the capture and playback of 4K, it connects via Thunderbolt.

ultrastudio 4K IBC 2012

UltraStudio 4K features full resolution 4K support, dual stream 3D capture/playback, 10bit hardware architecture, dual link 3 Gb/s SDI, support for up to 1080p60 in SDI, component analog and HDMI connections which support full SD, HD, and 4K.

“We are excited to be able to design new types of products that are only made possible because of Thunderbolt technology. This new “break out box” based design is extremely attractive while supporting new high resolution 4K playback and almost every video and audio connection available!” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “UltraStudio 4K is the best way to get high resolution 4K, advanced 3D and 4:4:4 capture and playback, in a professional rack based design that everyone can afford.”

We think this an amazing piece of kit for the price, maybe the only thing lacking is a Thunderbolt pass through which means it will have to be and end of chain device.

If you don't want a standalone box and prefer to have a capture card in your Mac, then the Decklink 4K Extreme also priced at $1,295 and available in November might fit the bill. We would be slightly nervous with this card as at the moment we have no idea about the architecture of the new Mac Pro, so maybe the Thunderbolted UltraStudio makes more sense. However, nice to see the Blackmagic site having Final Cut Pro X demoing the product. Do people make anything but car videos these days?

Blackmagic also announced a few more products, the last two of real interest to us being the UltraStudio Mini Monitor and the UltraStudio Mini Recorder.

At NAB 2012 Blackmagic announced the Thunderbolt powered UltraStudio Express that has SDI, HDMI and analog connections with dual break out cables for both professional and consumer analog. They thought they could go smaller and cheaper and the two new devices have only one function, the UltraStudio Mini Recorder records and UltraStudio Mini Monitor lets you play back. Priced at $145 each they will be available in Q4.

“UltraStudio Mini Monitor and UltraStudio Mini Recorder let you work anywhere because they are extremely compact and are powered from the Thunderbolt connection,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “You can simply plug into any Thunderbolt enabled laptop or a desktop computer and start working. With support for high bandwidth formats up to 1080p60 these are easily the most advanced capture and playback solutions that are small enough to fit in your pocket. There is nothing more portable!”
