Nvidia_Quadro_4000_mac

Another card gets launched today, this time the beefy $1,199 NVIDIA Quadro 4000 GPU. With FCP, Motion & FxPlug plugins using the GPU, more GPU power means faster renders. There are speed references with FCP mentioned on their site, but be warned this model will not fit some old MacPro's.

It seems as Mac users we get a bit of a bad deal when it comes to available GPU cards. We have never had access to the really powerful NVIDIA cards and also Apple don't seem to be that hot with driver support either. So the release of this card is good news for Final Cut Studio fans, we look forward to the Barefeats guys comparing the Motion render times to the ATI cards. What is slightly annoying though is the way that NVIDIA major on the Adobe products, let's hope that changes in April.

The drivers for this card are included in 10.6.5, but if you are thinking of buying one of these monsters, check if your MacPro is compatible.

MacPro Requirements: >>To find out if you are running the correct MacPro, go to About This Mac to find out what system you are running. You can find this by doing the following:

Go to • About This Mac
Click on the • More Info button
    Select • Hardware
The model identifier should be MacPro3,1 or MacPro4,1 (2008 or 2009) or later

Note: MacPro1,1 and MacPro2,1 are not compatible.

I've always found the Apple Motion discussion forum a good source of information about real world GPU performance.
