singular red giant

We didn't see this one coming. It was announced today (9th July) that Red Giant has acquired all of the products and the intellectual property of Singular Software.

News so big it stopped us editing for a show that was actually on air at the time! Visual processing tools, plugins and software applications company Red Giant has 'acquired' all of Singular Software's products.

The big blow to the excellent PluralEyes from Singular was the release of Final Cut Pro X which had similar multi clip syncing features built right into the NLE. Although Singular released an FCPX compatible version of PluralEyes, they had lost their USP and therefore a lot of potential sales to the growing FCPX user base. Supporting other platforms is expensive and the hook-up to Red Giant's product management and marketing seems like good sense.

"The entire Singular Software team is partnering with Red Giant, which keeps an important continuity in engineering and support. All development for Singular Software products will continue full-steam, with PluralEyes 3.0 for Mac scheduled for release in Summer 2012. Going forward, Singular Software technology will be a crucial part of Red Giant’s plans for new filmmaking and workflow products.

Beginning July 9, 2012, all Singular Software products will become part of the Red Giant portfolio, including:
  • PluralEyes for automated syncing of audio tracks and multi-camera video.
  • DualEyes for audio replacement for DSLR users.
  • CloudEyes, a set of audio/video synchronization services for developers.
  • Singular Software Presto, a quick, easy way to create professional quality videos of presentations.
  • All intellectual property for the related technology.
The products will continue to be sold and supported through Singular Software’s website over the next couple of months. In Q3 2012, Red Giant will complete their integration of the Singular Software products, and all sales and support will move to RedGiant.com."

You can read the full Press Release on Red Giant's website.  Bruce Sharpe produced a fantastically innovative product with PluralEyes, maybe too innovative for its time. It highlights the problem software developers have of not only marketing their product in the now cluttered FCP ecosystem, but also being vulnerable to the big NLE companies either incorporating similar functionality or introducing show stopping incompatibilities. You have to sell a lot of apps or plugins to rent square footage at NAB.
