Rather ironic that there are two stories here on FCP.co that feature the two big NLE's that ruled editing before Final Cut Pro was released. After looking at Avid's precarious situation, it was good to find Editshare have published 10 new video tutorials for Lightworks 11.
Avid and Lightworks dominated the NLE world in the nineties with highly priced systems that needed a mortgage to finance. They started off as offline tools which meant fuzzy looking pictures and a trip to a tape suite to online the pictures.
The life of Lightworks has had its ups and downs, being bought by multiple companies including Tektronix who made a four channel version built on a Profile video server. You could digitise 4 tapes at once!
Lightworks is now owned by EditShare who have published a new version of the NLE after an 18th month beta program. There are two versions of Lightworks available, the free version has less features and reduced support for different codecs. The Lightworks Pro version can be licenced for $60 a year with a 50% discount for education users.
Althougth Lightworks 11 is only available for Windows at the moment, Editshare have published a roadmap that indicates versions will become available for Mac OSX and Linux. As with any software roadmap, the schedule has slipped so no dates on the releases.
