Here we are again. Heading into the Fall, with Yosemite probably about a month away from release. It's hard to say with any certainly whether 10.1.4 will be a feature update, and how long we'll have to wait for it.

I've collected my thoughts on the release schedule in a blog post on my site.

disproportionatepictures.blogspot.ca/201...whats-next-1014.html

The short version is that based on past releases, the earliest we could see an update is in early November, after the release of OSX Yosemite. The average of all feature updates would be around 4 months [122 days], which would put the release in late December. On the outside, if 10.1.4 if a feature release, and takes as long as 10.1.2, it will be late January of next year before it's released.

My wants are mostly what they have been for the last year. Expansion of the use of Roles in Project organization and expanded audio functionality including mixing, better Motion integration, and some enhancement to the colour correction tools.

EDIT-

Coincidentally, Steve Martin of RippleTraining released a list of his Top10 feature requests.

Seems like there would be an update to coincide with the release of Yosemite.

FCPX 10.1.4 PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION 29 Sep 2014 17:22 #53393

I think it really depends on if there's anything in Yosemite that FCP X will be leveraging. iCloud Drive? Extensions? ProApps seem to have their own common interface language, so I don't think we can assume just because OSX is getting a visual overhaul that ProApps will be following suit immediately.

Well it might be sooner if this is true that a Retina (4K?) iMac is coming in Oct.

FCP X is already Retina ready, and has been since WWDC in June of 2012, when they released the first Retina MacBookPro, so I'm not sure what else they need to do on that front to make it ready for retina iMacs or Cinema Displays.

Yes, iCloud Drive was one of the features I was thinking about but also as mentioned above, the new iMac - which reportedly will have a 5K display, not 4K - and yes, that makes a difference.

I also have pretty much the same feature request list as you. :)

Plus, I really hope they improve 4K editing. I know it works and editors have been doing it for a while now, but my GH4 footage lags in FCPX yet it plays incredibly smooth with no dropped frames in Premiere Pro CC.

Hey Marcus,

I was hoping you would start a thread on this. Looking forward to all the fancy suggestions, bold speculations and personal wish-lists :)

@David: FCP X handles 4K and 6K without any problems. I think you are editing native Lumix footage using a computer with an Nvidia card, hence the difference. Premiere runs better on CUDA and FCP X runs better on OpenCL. If you were using a new MacPro with AMD GPUs you would see FCP X runs much smoother than Premiere with this same highly compressed footage. At least, that's my experience.

I'm actually running an early 2011 15" MBP (the one with the dreaded AMD GPU issues). You are correct though as far as the hardware is concerned, old hardware that I guess I can't expect to run 4K fluidly. I can't wait to get my hands on a new Mac Pro for some FCPX love.

Now if we could just get colors for roles....

Ah, I see. I am aware of different issues with FCP X on 2010 and early 2011 MBPs. That would indeed explain the sluggishness with your GH4 footage. A new MP or any recent iMac would make a LOT of difference.

I just have to reiterate that I really would like to see iCloud Drive integration. I sure hope Apple implements this in the next update and comes up with a way to really streamline collaborative workflows.

If iCloud Drive is how Apple is planning on implementing collaborative workflows, I don't expect we'll see that implemented very soon after the Yosemite launch. I think it will take a while to build on that platform.

I really hope we get some kind of update to the editing interface and new features.
It's been almost a year since anything significant has happened. While I still enjoy the program this laundry list of things that need to get done is wearing my enthusiasm down.

C'mon Apple time to make a big splash!

My ultimate top 10:

1. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Apple let us have all our colour correction monitors in one window (RGB Parade, Luma & Vector Scope)!
2. Motion round tripping of course.
3. OMF/AAF native export.
4. Detailed keyframe editing for all properties!
5. Native free form matts.
6. Adjustment layers that can translate in XML (the title cheat work around is awesome but only in FCP X).
7. Shallow depth of field effect like in Photoshop - isolate and identify subject and control BG blur :) So cool.
8. Dropping screen and title safe margins in full screen playback instead of manually using a shortcut key (FCP 7 did this).
9. Able to copy spacial conform and compositing properties in paste attributes.
10. PASTING ALL TRANSITION EFFECTS TO TITLES IN SECONDARY STORYLINE like simple blur.
11. Oh and being able to see Alpha in proxy media instead of having to switch to optimised.

Good list- I'd say the only thing that's probably a non starter is OMF/AAF export. Apple has stated pretty clearly at events within the last year that they still consider it a, "3rd party opportunity".

Also, the blur effect- do you mean tilt shift?

My top 10:

1: Visual Feedback ween using keyboard for ripple edit (I hate having to use mouse to ve able to se my incoming and out coming frame)
2: Ripple edit whit multiple selections. Example, being able to ripple two videos, one in the primary story line and one that is connected on top.
3: TC overlay, just to be able to see the TC in my monitor, both REC TC and Source TC
4: True TC reader for burn in.
5: Color markers
6: Color labels
7: Vertical organización using Rolls
8: MXF export
9: True Motion roundtrip
10: Metadata being transmitted between files when they are synced.

And i think a have more, but this are my top 10.

How about fixing the audio waveform drawing - this absolutely kills my system - I've heard even new Mac Pros can have issues.

And on the subject of Audio - a proper Master Audio Channel strip with the ability to insert plug-ins - limiting etc without having to group audio etc.

Also round tripping with Logic (can you tell I'm an audio guy!) the ability to use full channel strip effects chains (workaround is copying from template empty audio clips) that can be shared with Logic Pro.

Also - if we are getting really interesting - how about integrating motion data from (at this point just an iPhone) with a clip so we can get intelligent digital stabilization and depth of field...

If camera tech integrates these sensors, with cropped 4k images we should be able to get digital stabilization as good as any hardware tech. And being able to adjust depth of field properly in post - including range and position would be amazing.

Hi :)

The blur effect has landed with Adobes latest CC update called "Focus Area selection tool", you can read a bit more here www.photoshopessentials.com/basics/selec.../cc/2014/focus-area/, it is basically cutting out the subject onto transparency easier and more effectively.

Here's just hoping but probably not possible.
